I am considering purchasing a B&W PV1 and using the same sub for two systems in the same room, one AV and one Hi-Fi. I can see the B&W sub has both low and high level inputs.

The low level input will be fed to an AV amp and the high level to a stereo power amp. Note - the same left and right speakers are connected to the power amp
and I use the pre out from the AV receiver to the power amp.

Question is can I have both inputs connected ready to go (although not played at the same time). Is anyone on here using their PV1 in the same way for both Hi-Fi & AV listening with different amps?

Thanking you in advance.

I all mates!!, I'm here again since my last attempt to get my freq response with REW...well, now I finally have the RS SPL meter (analog model 33-4050), and I want to tell you how I did the measurement before nothing...

I set my meter in the listening position (with a tripod)...with an RCA-to-RCA cable, I connected the RS out to the right RCA-in of the jack-to-double RCA conversor like this one:

Then, the conversor to the mic-in (in the LINE-IN mode of course) of the laptop. Finally, the headphones-out of the laptop to the V-AUX-in of my Denon with a jack-to-double RCA cable (both RCA connectors fitted to the AVR but im not sure if I should connect just one¿?). Ok these are the connections, now the calibration...

With the calibration tone for subwoofers (and the speakers off in my amp) I set the volume in my Denon until the SPL meter measured 75db, in the 80db range(wich was very hard to do, because the needle of the meter was moving continously almost 3db up and down, due to fluctuations in the tone volume wich I could confirm just by ear and I think its a room problem:confused:). The meter was set in C and Slow. Once I had the sub at 75db I raised the meter range to 90db because I got some clip when calibrating, so I set the 90db range, then press calibrate again and finally I tell REW that the level was 75db for the new range.(I supose all that is correct)...then I had not any clipping. The crossover is at 80Hz from the receiver and REW...the sound card and the meter compensation files are loaded. Well this is the result:

and with 1/3 smoothing:

:facepalm:...:(...looks really BAD!!!!! seems like I have a cancellation at 20Hz...¡¡¡20Hz!!!!...and nothing below that...what do you think guys???...do you recomend me to buy a FBQ-2496??? can it make any improvement in the response?? (specially in the lower zone??)

Many thanks!!!...and sorry for my bad english...

I do run a good RCA cable Reference one thats one way and 75Ohms, and i do have a fancy Belden power cable that shields "EMI" so i might use that on the monolith too.

I vaguely recall reading that the sub must have speaker line level inputs, but I'm not sure if I remember correctly, as wouldn't that mess something up if the receiver is also sending power?

I've been trying to give my m8 some good advice about updating his aging home cinema system, I managed to convince him that the subwoofer on his 16yr old celestion sub sat setup is not really up to the task. So he's gone and ordered a svs pb13 and the eq1( didn't have to hypnotize him or anything) , The eq1 arrived yesterday and the sub should be hear on sat afternoon i think. Can't wait to get it all set up for him and see the look on his face. he's not got a clue how much better this is gonna make his system sound, the sat speakers are actually pretty decent but the sub he's got just now is cack to be perfectly blunt.

I've not set up a sub with an eq1 before but have some experience with svs pc13(pretty much the same as pb ), It's quite a large room about 7m x 4m with a high ceilings so i was thinking 20hz tuning ?, Just wondered what the guys on here thought and is there anything i should look out for with regards to the eq1 set up. Any advice would be much appreciated, Regards Jase.

Hi, having read this forum for some time and gathered a whole load of useful information from it, I now need some advice on which subs to consider buying as my current Rel Q100E just isn’t cutting it now.

At the moment I have a simple system used mainly for music consisting of a Cyrus DAC/PRE with 2x Monobloc amps and a pair of PMC OB1’s and finally the ageing REL Q100E. Music will be the primary use in the future.

The listening room is 5.4m wide x 6.5m long x 2.3m high giving 80 cubic metres (or 2848 cubic ft in old money), It has a suspended oak floor which is why I have the OB1’s on top of 4” thick granite blocks (god they weigh a lot but they work!), the Q100E is just on the floor in the corner at the moment though.

Overall the sound is great until I get to the sub-base, the problem is the Q100E just wont keep up with the already quite weighty and tight bass of the transmission line based OB1’s, The sub base from the Q100E is not tight or indeed loud enough, my feeling is its just not big enough for the job in this room.

Moving on to which subs I’ve been looking at, well there are the usual suspects, Monolith (or Monolith DF, what’s the difference), Velodyne DD15, or an SVS model. I have plenty of floor space in the far corner of my room (at least 70x70cm) but cannot consider a cylinder model as this would pop over the top of the sofa (wife unacceptable) I’d quite like to use balanced XLR inputs as my DAC/XP pre support it.

I think I would consider a second hand model but the Monolith seems to be already a bit of a bargain when new but I’m concerned it will run out steam in this room size. I guess a budget up to about £1000 if pushed

Can the great and the good out there offer some advice with my dilemma?

My budget is around 600 - 800 pounds and I was looking at the Velodyne series as an upgrade. My current room size is around 8m x 4m. I like the idea of the self callibration for the Velodyne but is this just a gimmick?
Which model would you recommend i go for or should i just stick with the REL's and save some money? How about the B&W's?
