Re: LD GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Writter/HD-DVD Reader combo drive

Just out of interest, would this work with an external enclosure? I'm assuming the PC would need DVI-out to benefit from the high-res playback.

I know little about this - just asking because I have a mate who might be into this kind of gadget.

Yeah it would work fine externally but obviously would need to be sata. You would also need hdmi/dvi output on your gfx card, but it would also need to be hdcp enabled for watching BD/HDDVD. However, I think the likes of anydvdhd or whatever removes the need for hdcp enabled cards. Most modern cards are hdcp enabled however.

Re: LD GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Writter/HD-DVD Reader combo drive

I got one last week from overclockers. It's great and comes with Power DVD Ultra Suite, so all you need is...errr....a very fast graphics card (a 8800 ultra in my case), a very fast processor (QX6700 in my case) a DVI cable to your plasma and a SPDIF cable into your AV receiver. Works like a treat! The format war is officially over for me

Your just showing off with your setup

For the record, any of the new lower end ati gpu's should decode blu-ray/hddvd just fine and pretty much any nvidia 8 series should do the job!

Ok fair enough, you don't need a quad core processor and an 8800 Ultra card But it certainly helps in terms of picture quality or if you're like me running a dual view setup with a plasma screen and want to use the PC for other things while someone watches a movie.

thanks for posting woodpecker. I was resigned to these being sold out until after Christmas, but this is good news. now all I have to do is ignore the guilt if I buy one. but then, this is the season of giving (admittedly, buying things for yourself isn't really the point I suppose)

I had also resigned myself to not having it this side of Xmas, new media PC is built ready with hole for the DVD drive. Had one on order with another supplier, rang them today, said stock had come in but wouldn't let me pay for a Saturday delivery upgrade, checked with Ebuyer and they were happy to take my £s for a Sat delivery. Just been emailed the tracking number so fingers crossed it will be here in the morning

Probably be back on the forums tomorrow with a configuration nightmare but that's half the fun

Happy Christmas!

SVP have em in stock and the price has come down too. A bargain at £186!

There is also the cheaper option - the same drive without BD writing capabilities for only £138. You cant go wrong there!

Excellent price on these drives, but for data backup purposes its still around £10 a pop for a blu-ray blank. Those prices need to come down sharpish.

out of interest is it firmware region protected for dvd/BD/HDDVD? in other words can it be used as a multiregion player for any of those?

I presume all is going well as you've not updated on here yet as you're watching lots od HD content!

If you could give some feedback and specs of your HTPC build, as I'm looking at doing a build myself.

Cheers!

Re: LD GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Writter/HD-DVD Reader combo drive

Does it need to go via the DVI on the card or can it be played through the vga output to d-sub?

My DVI to HDMI seems to be less clear than the VGA to Dsub cable.

(Using a 8500GT on a LE40M87).

Thanks.

New to this site but found this a little bit cheaper...at http://www.morecomputers.co.uk/extra.asp?pn=GGW%2DH20L

for £161.19 +£4.95 deliv

A couple of questions I have as i am not a computer techy do you think it would be possible to get PC World to install this for me IF i have trouble installing it myself?? And Am I correct in thinking that this is a Blue Ray reader Writer BUT Only a HD DD READER..??? If so why did LG make it like this, why not make it a HD DD Writer as well??
