Maplin speaker cable on offer - but any good ?

I suspect not - but spotted it on another forum so thought I'd re-post here

Original 9.99/metre price seems a bit suspect - and 1.5mm seems thin

Air Bass Flex 1.5mm² Bi-Wire Speaker Cable N92CK

Manufacturer: Profigold

4 Core High Performance cable -ideal for Bi Wiring Speakers to transport the mid/high and low frequencies in separate pairs
Solid Core conductor produces outstanding Bass response
Silver Plated OFC Conductors deliver increased sense of clarity & tightest bass
Additional Air Foam Insulation layer ensures transient response of high frequencies

This product is sold in units of 1 meter cable up to a maximum length of 50m.
Orders placed for the quantity of 50 metres, or multiples of 50 metres will be supplied on a reel : otherwise the cable will be supplied cut to length.
To place an order for this product, order the Maplin Order Code (N92CK) times the total number of metres required.

Down from £9.99 to 99p a metre

tbh if its silver plated it can't be that shoddy.

I picked mine up at the local store on Sunday no problem - do not believe the maplin web site. Very nice cable, sounds very fine indeed for 99p per meter!

Cheers,

Re: Maplin speaker cable on offer - but any good ?

There is still stock of this stuff at most stores, at 99p reduced from £9.99 per metre it's a steal.

I think I'll buy up the stocks at my local on my way home.

I may have some left over if anyone can't find any.

Only other price I can find for this is £7.20 a metre from ClearlyAV

*Edit* There is an ebay seller that has this for £2.50 Per M *Edit*

Re: Maplin speaker cable on offer - but any good ?

Thanks, all. Just picked up the last 32m at Bishopsgate store! I must say this does look and feel like very nice cable.

My only hope is that I've got enough (I did not measure up) - the last thing I need now is to run short and have the last few feet, or one speaker, connected by some cheap bell-wire!

Actually, if I do run short, I'll probably split the x4 cable into two and use that for the rear speakers. That should be ok, right?

Re: Maplin speaker cable on offer - but any good ?

Yes that is fine - but one of the pairs of cores are unmarked. When bi-wiring this does not matter, as you can tell which is which. However, if you split them, make sure you have a meter to check that you are wiring the speakers 'in phase' or you will get bass suck-out. If your speakers are grounded independantly of the amp (as they sometimes are in a car system), you will blow the amp up!

Enjoy!

Geoff

Re: Maplin speaker cable on offer - but any good ?

Geoff - thanks for the tips.

Maybe I should split the x4 cable into two x2's , lay it out flat and then place a few blobs of tippex at each end of one core. And then double-check!

Mark09

Yes, I'm sure this speaker cable would be fine for this set-up and I would snap it up before it disappears.

You don't need plugs and can always add them later on.
