don't worry about the microdrive- it's very reliable.
I have a fuji 602 (SLR shape) with microdrive- works fab- stores around 300pics at 3MB resolution or over 1000 at lower res!

When I got the camera about 18months ago, the microdrive retailed at £300 alone, so I waited and bought one this summer from www.scan.co.uk for £120. Don't know if it's fallen any further in price.

BTW,you can use the microdrive to store files for your PC. I use a USB card-reader and by plugging it into the PC and can then write to the new "E" drive (microdrive) then transfer files elsewhere.

Yes the microdrives are very reliable and quite robust.

The only thing is they can be quite power consuming, so not sure how long it will last in this particular camera.
