Re: Philips BDP 3000 £97

It's a good player for that price range, blu ray players between £100-200 they'll all be the same picture wise except features may change.

Although this lacks DTS-HD but if this is no problem then go ahead and buy it.

£99.99 at Amazon, seems to get very good customer reviews.

Re: Philips BDP 3000 £97

I picked this up from M&S as they had it for £99 for a day. I also had a gift voucher so it cost me about £72! I haven't set it up yet, it's for the bedroom when I move house soon. It got good reviews when available for £150-£160+ so it's a steal at this price. As jalaldevil says, there's no DTS-HD support so it will downconvert to standard DTS if you don't have an amplifier capable of doing the decoding - the Philips will bitstream DTS-HD, just not decode internally. This is fine for me as it'll be connected directly to a 40" LCD, I have a Denon bluray player in my main setup (see sig).

Re: Philips BDP 3000 £97

thanks for advice,

2 more questions;

1) so if i plug this straight into my HD LCD, with no amps/stereosystem, would it play sound (downgraded) or would i need additional equipment?

2) how does this player fair with ps3? i say this this because i do like how PS3 has wireless internet so less wires if i wanted BD Live and also, an option to play games (though i doubt it - 360 customer)

Re: Philips BDP 3000 £97

BD live is rubbish, I doubt you'd be ever using it. The BD player would downgrade the audio to 2.0 if it's connected to an lcd tv for obvious reasons. The sound and picture will work, no need for extra stuff i.e. speakers.

PS3 is a great choice, only £199 at Sainsbury, no need to worry about firmware updates in the future.
If you have videos on the PC you could stream it, BBC iPlayer at your tips and there will be more services in the future.

If money is an issue then go for the BD player.

1. You'll get sound, just not HD. It will downconvert to stereo and work fine. This is exactly what I bought it for, it'll be connected to just a TV, dedicated equipment is in the lounge.

2. PS3 is a decent player but twice the price and not worth it in my opinion if you game on the 360 (as I do). I've considerd one in the past as they make a pretty decent media hub and can play various video and audio formats. Personally, I think you're better off with a cheaper player and build a HTPC or something like an ASRock Ion330 at a later date - this is what I plan to do. Money is tight at the moment so rather than £300 on a mini HTPC and time setting it up, I picked up a cheap bluray deck to complement Sky HD. It should more than suffice until I buy a HTPC - I can easily connect my laptop up to the LCD in the meantime which has IR so can be remote controlled.

Re: Philips BDP 3000 £97

ahhhh i think im just gonna have to flip a coin on this one.

i like the cheapness of the blu ray player

but i like the extra features with ps3 (gaming, wireless and streaming media)

Re: Philips BDP 3000 £97

I don't think you can go wrong either way really and the PS3 slim for £199 is a good deal. Maybe if you hold off a couple of weeks, you might get a game with it for that price. If you do plan to use it for gaming then you could argue that you spent £100 on a bluray player with lots of additional features and £100 for a HD games console. Not a bad deal

Personally, I'm not a PS fan and I'm very happy with my 360 so I'd rather save £300 for a device such as an Ion330. The PS3 is a good bit of kit though and well priced (finally).
