Are DVD rips as good as the original?

Hypothetical question on my part - do differences in disk quality, quality of the DVD recorder and different ripping software/options affect the quality of a copied disk? Technically we are
dealing with digital information but its my gut feeling the above do play a role and therefore an original would always look best on a really good display device like a plasma. What do you
think?

depends who and how they are ripped.
Some are "as good" others very poor.

When I say 'rip' I mean like-for-like copy (or someone attempting to create one) rather than copying with a deliberate/inherent degradation of quality due to compression as in DVD to VCD rips.

www.dvdshrink.com is where you will find a 'one button' Rip to DVD. I have done several including 'SWII-AOTC' Incredible quality for Film only.

bearing in mind the 4.3gig limit on recordable discs, then 1:1 should show no diff. on any display.
but vast majority of pre-recorded dvd`s are above 4.3gig so expect losses accordingly.

Not being picky, but blank DVD-R are 4.7GB capacity.

If you drop out extra languages and subtitles then you reduce the required space on the disc.

4.7Gb is what media manufacturers quote but they use different counting rules to your computer which uses binary system

Media 1Gb = 1000 x 1000 x 1000
Computer 1Gb = 1024 x 1024 x 1024

So 4.7Gb is actually about 4.37Gb
