Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
I believe the Archos units are allowed to store commercial dvds on their hard drives, for you to watch on trips etc .You cannot copy them to other devices though.

Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
your probably not allowed to discuss dvd shrink on here, but like i said the archos units do what you require and are legal in that regard.

Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
It is usually possible to PLAY DivX discs on machines that support DivX ... but not possible to move them to the hard drive.

If it's capable of transferring home DVDs (ie. camcorder or PC edited) then it's just as likely to work with any DVD that DOESN'T have copy-protection on it. DVDs WRITTEN on your home PC CANNOT have copy protection on them.

Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
So can anyone confirm that they have successfully stored their dvds on the hard drive even tho its not supposed to be for that purpose ?

Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
In case anyone's interested....a dvd/freeview player with USB port + external hard drive should do it

Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
On Panasonic EX77 as long as the DVD is not copy protected you can. I tried this with an old Sherlock Holmes DVD and it copied over no probs (well the few minutes I tried). You would have to copy over in real time. Alright as long as you don't want to use the machine to record TV as the DVDs would take up a whole lot of space. I also had the option of recording in different quality modes so that would be an option of streatching out how many DVDs you could get on the hard disk.

Re: DVD to Hard drive on dvd recorders ?
Thanks for that info Bigalt, i plan on getting myself a fairly cheap dvd/freeview player (not worried about recording TV really as most of its crap anyway!) with a USB port plus a 160-250GB portable hard drive..then via my PC i can back up my dvds and possibly convert to divx/mpeg that way i'll be able to get a substantial amount of DVDs viewable from my bed !
