Which recorder: sony 870 or philips DVDR5520H or DVDR3577H primarily for Freesat PVR?

Hi Guys,
I've done a fair amount of research into a good recorder for freesat use,
and think I have narrowed it down to a Sony 870 or philips DVDR5520H or DVDR3577H.

Advantage of philips is the proper pause live tv function with constant 6 hour buffer and instant pause. The philips 5520 is a bit pricey (empiredirect £280) as it is a new release, but I don't really need the freeview (but would be nice to have) so could get a 3577/3555 for the same price as the sony sans freeview.

What do you think?

Are there any others that I should consider?

You say you don't need the freeview... so is it right to conclude that you have sky or cable?

If so, the 870 is suited to recording from such sources.

I don't know anything about the Philips units as yet... but it is worth checking that they have similar facilities.

You can get the Philips for £249 (still not ideal) from Next, although they have no stock at present. Also, as far as I know, Philips is the only manufacturer that allows you to record in 5.1 from an external source (like $ky), but to access it you must play back on the same machine.

I had 4 philips units from Comet and everyone had problems especially with watching programs with the time slip feature- the picture would freeze every so often for about 2 seconds and the picture would suddenly flash brighter when watching normal tv through the philips so I'd be very wary with regard to philips. Philips customer services were excellent though and told me that comet probably had a bad batch lol. Anyway yesterday I brought the new Panasonic EX768, but have found out since that its not divx so tomorrow I'm swapping it for the Sony 870.
