region hack for RDR-HXD970

My new player should be arriving soon. Of course one of the first things I do is remove the region coding.
Problem is, all the region hacks I have come across for this recorder are based around using a "One For All" remote.

Problem is, I don't have one (well not a recent one)

I do have a laptop and a VERY old PDA with the first version of Pocket PC released (finding software is a nightmare)

Does anyone have any confirmed ways of hacking it with what I have?

either that or its EBAY TIME!!!!!!!!
