Upscaled signal via component connection?

Firstly, thank you all for a superb forum. It is e-learning at its very best.

I am considering buying a Pioneer DVR545HX or alternatively a Pioneer DVR540HX. I would connect this to a JVC LCD flat screen TV model LT-26C31BJE that can accept a 1125i signal, with no mention in the instruction book about a 1080i signal.

Upscaled signals are (normally?) sent via an HDMI connection. My JVC does not have an HDMI connection.

I have contacted JVC and they replied (very promptly) that if I could receive a 1080i up-scaled signal via component connections I would enjoy a higher quality picture.

This does perhaps contribute to the discussion about whether upscaled signals are any improvement to picture quality considering the upscaling facilities in all LCD TVs. I will just leave that issue hanging - perhaps someone can comment?

My question is: can the 545 send its 1080i signal via component connections? (I have looked on the Pioneer site, but have been unable to find their email address, otherwise I would have posed the question directly to them.)

If the 545 cannot send a 1080i signal via component connections, it seems my choice will be the 540, unless there are other advantages, for example, future-proofing, if such a thing even exists in this fast-moving technology.

Your responses would be most helpful.

Re: Upscaled signal via component connection?

I have perused the manual of the DVR-545HX-S and it appears that via component you only have the option of progressive or interlaced pictures only.[ not upscaling ]

To upscale to other resolutions you would require the HDMI interface.

You can find the manual here:

http://www.service.pioneer-eur.com/p...VR-940HX-S.pdf

Don't be put off by the 940HX in the link, That model shares the same manual.

Re: Upscaled signal via component connection?

1125/60 was an early Japanese analogue HDTV standard.

Apparently some DVD players can upscale over component, but they drop to standard definition if they detect copyright protection on the DVD because of the CSS license conditions.

I wouldn't worry about upscaling. The TV will upscale the signal to fill the screen anyway, and unless it's old or cheap it will probably do the job just as well as a player or recorder. A progressive standard definition output from the player/recorder, which you can get via component, can give better results than interlaced when playing commercial DVDs that have been transferred from film.

Re: Upscaled signal via component connection?

Many thanks to all who responded to my requests.

As a result, I have decided that there is no sensible reason to buy a 545; the 540 model will suit my needs very well.

I considered future-proofing (by buying the 545) but decided that such a concept is mythical in this field of technology. Innovations appear with regularity, so should I be in the market again in 5 years' time, I judge the media technology available then will make all present equipment obsolete. Moore's Law seems to rule here as well. So I will not buy more than I need now.

My kind regards to all. Have a GREAT New Year.
