Why are dual layer DVD's much cheaper at last ?!

I notice big pockets are now selling tubs of 10 dual layer DVD's for £8.49. This is quite a staggering price drop when up until a few weeks ago just 1 blank would have cost you nearer £3 and even more from other places incl ebay

Is there a reason I don't know about as I'm not sure why it has taken so long for such a dramatic price drop ?

Re: Why are dual layer DVD's much cheaper at last ?!

All DL+R's are coming down (don't bother with DL-R as the comatibility with players is very very small) but, the cheapest DL+R's are not very good.

The best are Verbatim's with MKM dye and play on everything and are down to around £2 each separately or around £15 for 10. These are the only ones I recommend. I also have Datasafe Ritek D01 dyue discs and they are not very good. Only one player out of four works with them. I have seen them for 99p now. Verbatims are also a lot higher quality.

Discs with CMC Magnetic dye are even worse than Ritek D01 dye.

I think you will find all the cheap discs are these poor dyes.

As I said, they are rubbish which is why cheapest one are the cheapest at less than £1 each. The rest are just going down in price as more people buy them when realising the quality of the other discs so the demand goes up.

But it is very strange to me all of a sudden at least from big pockets they are now 85p each. Blue ray disks are £7.99 btw but recorders are about £680 LOL !

Re: Why are dual layer DVD's much cheaper at last ?!

It's not just them.

The rubbish discs I used have gone down to around £1.30 each at SVP but Verbatims are £2 each. They have gone down by 50%. Not as much as Bigpockets, maybe they got a huge discount on a load of them.

It does sound cheap for BR discs. The ones I have seen have been nearly £15.

BR discs are listed at £15 in Argos and Woolworths now so they will clearly be much less than that online.

Re: Why are dual layer DVD's much cheaper at last ?!

I brought 10 printable dual layer disks for about £10, at last a much more reasonale price but there don't seem to be RW versions available plus they won't record with a 'home' DVD recorder I guess ?

I've had best results with the TuffDisc branded DL discs ...

How do you know that cheap discs are worse than the more expensive Verbatim discs?

Surely discs either work or they don't?

If the cheap discs work on your recorder then why pay more for the same thing?
I have DVD+RW discs that are 5 years old or more, and still play and record perfectly, and these are not top price discs.

Cheap discs are poorer quality and compatibility is a lot worse. The cheap discs only play on one player compared to five with the Verbs. Also, the cheap discs have detoriated after about six months with a lot of read CRC errors. The Verbs are still 100%.

You get what you pay for. The Verbs are the best you can get and are the only recommended ones for the long term.

You can compare +RW with Double Layer DVD's.
