Record 5.1?

I'm not sure how accurate this is but I was told that current dvd recorders can't record the 5.1 track. So, if I have a Sky+ film recorded on my Sky+ HDD in 5.1, is it possible to record this on a dvd recorder?

Is this an old wives tale or a fatal design flaw!

dvd recorders only record in stereo.you can playback the film and use pro logic but thats about it.
as it has been said on here many times before i dont think there is a dvd recorder that can record in 5.1 as of yet

Oh ok. Is there a particular reason why they can't record in 5.1? i.e. the amount of space required to hold the track or is it more deliberate than that?

I'm in market for one, and must say thats one hell of a let down!

im not quite sure of the physical reasons why,space on disc etc i am sure others may comment on it.

it has been suggested that it is a more delibarate.that would be my opinion.if i could record films etc from sky in 5.1 i would pobably never by a retail dvd again unless it was something extra special that i wanted.maybe for special features and the like.

i usually sky+ something first
if its good maybe record it on my dvd recorder(i can then playback in pro logic)
if its really good i buy the dvd(if i havent bought it already not been able to wait untill it came on sky)

Philips do one.

PIONEER 540 Advice
It has drawbacks eg you can only use the 5.1 decoding on the Philips, not on any other DVD player.

So does the Pioneer DVR540HXS record 5.1? Had a look on the pioneer website but it doesn't seem to mention it.

Nope.

There's only the vapourware Philips DVDR9000H and now recalled (not sure why but it weren't too hot) Philips DVDR7250H that have digital inputs for AC3 recording.

It was a nice idea but trust me the Pioneer wipes the floor with anything Philips can produce. Really impressed with the DVR540HXS....even with its 2 channel AC3 or PCM recordings.

Is that because you have tried the Philips in question/other Philips recorders, or is that a sweeping statement to defend your choice?

Had a Philips DVDR70 (well 3 of them ) before and trying to deal with the issues I had with Philips over the DVDR7250H was next to impossible so I guess it's not a sweeping statement.

No need to defend my choice on the Pioneer.....it speaks for itself (obviously not literally!)
