Help - Panasonic DMR-EH50 DVD Recorder - tuning problem

I have just bought the Panasonic DMR-EH50 DVD Recorder secondhand (although rarely used).

I have an NTL cable box providing all channels (including those that would normally be on terrestial) which does not have a scart connection.

I have tried using the same connections as I did with my old video which are similar to that in the instruction booklet for connecting a television with RF socket and satellite/digital terrestial receiver (which seems to be the closest in the booklet to my situation although the TV does have a spare scart connection). This involves connecting the RF coaxial lead from the VHF/UHF RF In socket on the back of the TV to the RF Out socket on the back of the DVD recorder plus another coaxial lead from the RF In on the back of the DVD recorder to the RF Out on the back of the cable box.

I can play DVD discs fine but apart from one channel on cable (price drop TV even if the cable box is actually set on another channel!!!) the recorder does not tune into any other stations.

Any ideas on where I am going wrong please? I'm not very technically savvy so no doubt the answer will be obvious to those who are!

Thanks

Before we can help you please provide a little more information as follows:
(a) When you say your NTL cable box has no scart connection do you mean it has no scart sockets at all?
(b) Do you have a digital TV connection to NTL? Our cable connection pre-dated digital cable TV and I was amazed to find that, initially, I could tune the TV channels to receive different cable channels independantly. This information was not available in the cable handbook. Since we went digital this can no longer be done and, in fact, we lost a number of foreign language channels. My point is this, without a digital connection you may be tuned into one cable channel and not the cable box.
(c) Do you have a separate TV channel tuned in to the cable box which will function even if the DVD recorder is in stand-by mode?
(d) Do you have a separate TV channel tuned in to your DVD recorder?
