Grey slashbox icon Panny eh50 - what will it inhibit ?

I am copying my vhs recordings over to Panny eh50 hdd, thence to dvd-ram and onto PC, ad removal with VideoReDo or Ulead DVD Movie Factory 4 Disc Creator and then write DVD-R with Nero.

I usually let the 3hr vhs run and divide title afterwards, I have in some of these recordings in their thumbnails a grey icon of a square with diagonal bar. Now I seem to recall seeing an icon of an X in the Panny manual (now cannot find the page), something about copyright or copy once ?

If I divide title the icon then appears with both titles, basically it infests everything then off that vhs cassette, including progs recorded before such a copy inhibitor thing was dreamt up, if that’s what this icon is ? I can re-record the first prog and stop recording at its end, and get no slashbox icon. If however I let it run into the next prog which had the cause of this icon transmitted with it and capture that with the first prog, then divide title, both now are infested.

What will working with a title with the slashbox icon mean, where in my workflow above will I hit a barrier ?

Are there ways of avoiding this icon happening and infesting all progs off a tape ?

I am currently having to stop the DVD recording at the end of each vhs prog, this is a right pain as I am having to rerecord the cassette again, so 3hrs wasted, then hang about as a prog comes to an end to stop dvd recording before the perhaps infested prog kicks in and infests my first clean prog !

I have seen this before with a transfer from VHS on my E95 and it didn't give me any problems. I think it just means that you can only make one copy of it - i.e. it'll let you transfer the recording to DVD one time only. There's nothing to stop you re-recording it from the VHS, but you just can't run off a dozen DVDs from it.

Once you get it to the PC I suspect that the editing software there will just ignore the 'one-time only' flag.

Hi, thanks for advice, so can get it onto dvd-ram and onto PC, is it that the restriction is remembered by the Panny and the PC surgery will cut through it then. Hope so. Pain that the restriction gets onto footage that never had it, thats what bugs me most !

I'm guessing that if you copy it to DVD-RAM the setting will be copied as well, and I'm also guessing that most PC software will ignore it.

I don't know why it sometimes appears and sometimes doesn't - I've done about half a dozen transfers from pre-recorded VHS to DVD and it only showed up on one of them. Only one couldn't be copied at all.

I suspect it's down to when the VHS was made. The older it is the less likely it'll have the "don't copy" or "only copy once" signal embedded in the video.

Regards

Note I am at the moment talking of vhs cassettes which are blanks and I have recorded TV progs onto them, heaven knows what restrictions I shall meet up with when I get as far as my purchased vhs tapes. Has anyone found that it says copying not allowed, and by sticking sellotape over the square hole on the back it then thinks its a blank and allows copying ?
