Noob DVDR/HDD Recorder Questions

Got my Panny EH50 yesterday and have a few basic questions.

Just got a 15inch LCD recently for the bedroom and thinking of installing the panny in there too. They both have component in/out - is component much of an upgrade from RGB Scart. I always thought it was, but the manual seems to say RGB scart is the way to go.

When recording on anything other than the HDD or DVD-Ram it only records in 4:3, the manual states this - but is this normal? Do other recorders suffer from this?
