Entry level machines start at £99 and are usually the +R/RW type based on Philips machines. They record straight onto disks up to 6 hours. I also have two of these type of machines and they are basically a replacement for your video.

Well without looking I'm pretty sure the cheapest HD/DVD recorder is above £200.
The above link sends you to LX Direct and the Pioneer model with a discount coupon gets it for £270 which is a steal. I believe this code works for a 10% discount xx5555.

The 10% code is needed to get it for £270. It's 299 normally. You're right though that is a great price. It's £100 more from most other e-tailors.

I'm actually the sort of person to look at quality before price so wouldn't normally consider cheap as chips equipment but I don't see myself recording much so am not keen to spend £300. Having said that I don't own one (and important point) and strongly get the feeling my opinion of them will greatly enhance when I do.

I also intrigued at how much you can get one for.

What features do you get in recorders over the £300 mark?

I can't see a lot of difference bar build quality. Sure you get HDMI (for instance) but I won't be using the recorder for watching pre-pressed DVDs.

Hi, re the DVR530-h Pioneer dvd recorder with 160gig hdd from lx selling at £299.99. I've recently rang soundandvisiononline to price one of these up and they sell theirs at about £370.00. Now i explained that lx are selling these for £299.00 and the reply was well they can't unless they are imported players.
Plus the code for the extra 10% discount seems for me to giveentry to a prize draw of £1000, not a 10% discount.

Wonder if anyone can clear up these points please?

The LX Direct price does seem very good but then they can be very good generally speaking (I paid £70 for the top of the range Philips Philishaver that retails at £200 everywhere else).

So what if it's imported? It will have a UK plug and UK warranty + an English manual.

Hi this is a bit off the threads so far. However i have a panny TH42PW6 and
for playback on dvd i use my Toshiba SD9500 via component. Now i want to
finnaly upgrade the video recorder which i still have my trusty Toshiba 804B
VHS.

I've been checking things out and would love to get the sky+ but at £260 for
the 40gig box including fitting plus signing up for a year with at least one premier
subscription is a little off putting atm.

So far i've seen as above threads the 160gig Pionner DVR-530H for £299.00.
Or mabe the Panny dmre055 which is a little old now and without hdd. What is
good about the panny is it's selling at my local coop for £160 and 12 months
interest free credit.

Any advice most grateful.

I've recently replaced my pioneer 420 HD recorder for the 530 model.
If your budget will stretch to £273 then the pioneer from lx direct is cracking value.
I had the same thoughts as you last year when i bought my first DVD recorder and non HD models are somewhat disappointing in their editing facilities.
If possible buy a HDD model they are superb bits of kit especially when linked to a freeview/cable/$ky box.
