DVD player with HDMI do I use componet or Full RGB

Hi,

I have a Pioneer DVD player DV 940V and I connect it to a plasma samsung TV with a HDMI cable.

For the best picture, it has a setting use component or Full RGB, which is best?

Unless someone has exactly the same equipment as you and the same taste in pictures it's hard to say. General guidance TV's usually have better scalers than auxiliary equipment (but not always the Pioneer might be better than the Samsung).

Whatever way you go the final picture will always end up with the same number of pixels, how you get there depends on how you set up the equipment. Feed the TV standard definition SD 576i (rgb scart, component or hdmi) the TV will do all the scaling. Set the hdmi output from the DVD to other than 576i the TV will complete the scaling for settings less than it's native resolution and do nothing if the hdmi delivers the same pixel count as the TV uses on it's screen. HDMI has the advantage of maintaining a digital connection (RGB and Component are analogue) but even this does not necessarily mean the best picture.

In short try them all, hdmi at each output setting, RGB scart and component (the component may well have a 576p setting that's worth trying), the best is the one you prefer. Remember the TV has individual settings for each input with hdmi usually offering the least options (can be a right pain with 4:3 material on DVD) and you may need to tweak each one for the best result.

Of course to try the options you will need to connect using a scart lead for scart and a component lead for component these options won't change the hdmi connection at all

Switching the hdmi from RGB to component is unlikely to make any difference at all.

DVD video uses component colour so ideally set your player to output YCbCr 4:2:2 (this may be just called "component colour" and you may not get the choice of 4:2:2 or 4:4:4).

If you decide to use RGB some players/displays also require you to set the HDMI black level if you use RGB signal. Video black level is often called "Normal" and "PC level" enhanced. This needs to be correct at both end otherwise the image may look too dark or washed out if there is a mismatch.

Don't forget to check black and white level calibration following changes to the settings.
