Which Progressive Scan dvd player?

Just bought a Panasonic PD30 hooked up my panny 656 and the picture is very good but i think it could be better, which prog scan player would you recommend?

There are several good value ones just out including the NTSC Prog Scan only Pioneer 565 [£220ish] and the PAL/NTSC Prog Scan Sony 930 [£260ish]. There have been some good forum comments about the Sony and i'm sure the Pioneer will be a good little machine. Other than that you have players like the PAL/NTSC Prog Scan Philips 963, the NTSC Prog Scan only Tosh 900e still available at a great price [£500 from LE Concepts] and the Denon 2900 which has been getting great magazine reviews but mixed forum comments...

Harmon Kardon DVD25 does PAL and NTSC progressive and is around £300.

I've had the Panasonic S75 for about 3 months now and can't really fault it TBH...does NTSC PS and DVD audio and can picked up on the net for about £120 multi region if you shop around...

Thanks for the replies, does anyone have the pioneer 757 with pal/ntsc progressive and want to comment?

I was looking at the sony 930 until someone mentioned a 2 second layer change which tbh is a bit of a joke.

the sony layer change isn't any longer than most dvd players, sometimes it can be quite quick.

I have the sony on some dics's the layer is very quick on others a bit slower however I am prepared to put up with it for the sake of the picture it is awesome. I tried it against a 757i & to be honest the £350-£400 price difference makes it a no contest. I am not yet running the sony on ps as I am deciding which plasma to get however on my sony 36fs76 the was no difference it might be different in ps but I very much doubt the pioneer is worth nearly 3 times as much

I can second Army Blokes recommendation for the S75 if you don't want or need PAL progressive.

I saw it on my HT1000 and the picture looked just as good as the Pioneer I demo'd it with - possibly a 656, as it was via component.

If I wasn't happy with HTPC I'd have bought one - great player for just £120, and is very detailed with no artefacts or background noise.

I have seen at least 3 people say the layer change is poor on the sony so i won't be buying one.

The player i get has to have ntsc/pal progressive otherwise i probably wont bother.

Just my $0.02 - I don't have the Sony but for what it's worth, I don't think a slightly slower layer change would effect my decission to buy it when it looks to be excellent in all other areas including the price....

I think the new Tosh's have PAL/NTSC Prog Scan [possibly the 530?] so that may be an option or indeed the Harmon Kardon DVD25 as mentioned... If you are looking in the > £500 range then the Pioneer 757 [newer ones have PAL Prog I believe] would seem to be a good solid choice.

Basic question!
I am about to get a 36" PD30 and at present have a Toshiba 220 DVD. Want to upgrade to get better pic quality with the PD30. I watch region 1 and 2 DVds. So my daft question from a novice is:
Do I need a DVD player that plays both PAL and NTSC progressive? If I get one that is only NTSc progresive what will I be missing out on?

Why would a 1/2 - 1 second layer change pause be the deciding factor in buying a DVD player? For the PAL/NTSC progressive feature, excellent picture, I'd go with the Sony.

Jeez, are we all getting that fussy!

Pal, it's your money, spend it on what you want. As long as you are happy with your player, that's all that counts. If 1/2 second is a big thing to you then don't buy the Sony.

Just thought i'd put my 2 bit in....i have the Harmon Kardon dvd25 which once upgraded plays both PAL / NTSC progressive scan...it is fantastic for both sound and vision and I would definitely recommend it....but as Tman says....it's up to you.

Pioneer has just launched the new DV-668Avi and DV-868Avi at the IFA Berlin 2003, both has NTSC/PAL-Prog, DVD-A, SACD, HDMI but 868 adds i.link as well.

And Denon launched at IFA their new DVD-2200 for MRRP of 799€ (around £560) in Germany. It has NTSC/PAL-Prog, DVD-A and SACD.

If you can wait a couple of months, you hopefully will know the performance of them.
