What is a "chroma bug"?

I have heard of several DVD players which suffer from something called a "chroma bug" when doing prog scan. Can someone please explain what a Chroma Bug is?

Thanks.

Which players don't suffer with this problem?

I am now looking at the Pioneer 757 player.

I am willing to spend about £800.

I am not going to touch the Harmon Kardon 25 or the Philipps 936 player.

Pioneer's have it.

For under £800 you should be able to get a Denon 3800 with Multi region , PAL progressive output & chroma bug fix. They may be hard to track down though as they are being phased out for new model ( this autumn ?)

Panasonic. I know the RP-91K doesn't- if I was to buy a replacement DVD player that'll be the model I'll go for.

It's to do with the MPEG decoder used in the player so some models of one brand of player will have it while others from the same company will not.

Here is a list from an American site (so the model numbers may be a bit different in some cases to model numbers here)

Hmmm my Sony 1st gen DVP-S500 looks like it might not have the bug (same age as the 7000) wheras the newer "improved" 7700 & 9000ES have it.

Certainly is, which is why it's also present in Sky digital (and other digital television) and even Windows DVD players; most MPEG2 decoders in fact.

Credit where credit due, this was first identified by this board's very own RichardA and then first documented by the "Secret of Home Theater and High Fidelity" some three plus years ago, who published the problems some players had chroma in their MPEG2 decoders.

This article DVD Benchmark The Chroma Upsampling Error and The 4:2:0 Interlaced Chroma Problem is still the definate article IMHO, and is updated -- and credits Richard Ansell of Snell & Wilcox.

Edit -- having problems with bold tags again.
