Thanks: Gave 7, Got 0 | PS3 vs Oppo DV-983H vs Pioneer DV-LX50
Hi all, I've done a search on the forum, and still can't come to any definitive conclusions, and am just looking for a bit of advice (especially if anyone can comment on the dvd players first hand.)
I'm just after buying a pioneer lx5090 and am looking to match it with a really good upscaling dvd player to get the most out of the screen.
I already have a ps3 for my blu rays, but was wondering whether it is worth purchasing either an Oppo DV-983H or pioneer DV LX50 for my dvd collection?
Has anyone seen or compared the three of these, and can offer an opinion.
Any comments/suggestions appreciated
Mike

I'm quite sure that Oppo is the best of all these players if we are talking about picture quality. This review compares Oppo DV983H and Playstation 3.

I got the Oppo last week. In my opinion it's amazing. I only had a Pioneer DV575 before, but the difference in picture and sound is miles apart.

Seems from this post that even the Oppo 980 betters the DV LX50.. http://www.avforums.com/forums/showp...&postcount=156

I'm guessing these players are at a level where the image is so good you would need specialist testing equipment to really tell which is doing the better job.
So when it came to purchase i choose the LX50 purely because it matched my Pio 6090 perfectly.
Thanks

Thanks | The lx50 deinterlacing isn't class leading. No need for specialist test gear to observe moire artefacts. See screen shot example in the "Best HDMI DVD Player with 576i output" (Page 12) thread.

I've just ordered LX50 to match my amp (VSX-LX60) and hopefully squeeze some more out of my DVD collection displayed on a 428XD panel. I have no dedicated CD player (other than a noisy PS3) so another reason in my case is the audio capabilities of the LX50 (SACD, analog 5.1 etc). Finally, I have a wife that will be happy to use only the remote supplied with the amp for controlling all three units
Deinterlacing by LX50 is inferior to the Oppo, but in my case the above mentioned reasons outweights this particular issue. Btw, anyone tried letting their amp do the deinterlacing?

Avi | Hi Avi Fair enough, point taken. But to be honest i have never noticed this effect on any material i have watched and in general i am quite critical, so i'm sure i would have noticed if this was something the LX50 was prone to.
However i dont own a copy of "Gladiator" so cannot check myself, but if a few frames in one particular movie is whats in question here, then i can live with it.
EDIT: Purely as an afterthought, could this effect be introduced by having the HDMI colour mode incorrectly chosen?
Should be set at "Component" NOT "RGB" or "RGB Full" within the players "initial settings" menu. An interesting article here http://www.audioholics.com/tweaks/ca...vels-xvycc-rgb The last section at bottom of page sums it up.
Or does this have no bearing on things?

Avi | Ah ok, thanks for that..i'm not to up on the technical stuff so wasn't sure.
A very interesting article nevertheless, have gained a couple of good tips from it.
All the best
