Why upscale 3 times ?

OK bit of a novice here when it comes to upscaling. I am playing Blue Ray through my media centre PC and this is working great. Sometimes it can be a pain in the **** to boot up the pc just play a CD or DVD and I am now thinking of buying a good DVD player for this task, as I am still using an old Sony model with component outputs feeding my receiver.
I am in the process of trying to work out if I will benefit from an upscaling model eg. Oppo 980 or 981. I have a Yamaha 2700 receiver which can upscale to 1080i and pass through 1080p. I also have just bought an Infocus X10 DLP 1080p projector. My understanding is that all displays and projectors upscale their inputs to the max resolution of the screen or Pj (720p or 1080p). My question relates to the need to have un upscaling DVD player when the receiver and pj already upscale. Is there a simple clarification of this anywhere please ?

Simply put what happens to the original image if it is being upscaled once, twice or even 3 times ?

Mnay thanks

Graham

Re: Why upscale 3 times ?

Whichever device upscales the image first, that is what is fed through the chain so you do not upscale 3 times.

However, if you are feeding a 1080i signal (for example) into a device that converts to 1080p, then the 1080p device will normally de-interlace, i.e. at each stage, the maximum upscalign is done. But if at any stage that is up to 1080p level, then that is the ultimate upscaling level that you will get.

In short, the best upscalign device should do the upscaling. Usually that's the source.

But you have to ask yourself, will a cheap DVD player upsacle better than a £1k TV? Most probably, but will you notice? That's for you to decide.

Re: Why upscale 3 times ?

Thanks Funky...so what would you think of something like the Oppo 980h set to 1080p then get the receiver to pass through this to the 1080p Pj ?

Does that sound like the best signal path ?

Re: Why upscale 3 times ?

Just to add to Funkymonkeys superb explanation, most intermediate devices such as AV receivers will not touch a signal if the connection is made via HDMI. Compatible AV receivers such as your 2700 will however upscale (if you tell it to do so) any of the analogue video inputs. If the goal is to get the best picture, you should try to avoid digital to analogue conversion as much as possible. Put simply this means, depending on which device does a better job, either the source or the screen should be left to upscale.

I would say any decent upscalign DVD player - the Oppo is a great one - is going to upscale better than any PJ. So go for it. And don't forget, the Oppo is a player that lso happens to excel with SACD and DVDA material - if you remember those.
