DVD to amp connections

Just bought at Yamaha RXV1700 amp and DVDS2700 DVD player and could do with some advice as to which of the various connections to use for audio.

The receiver will connect to my X1 SD PJ via component for now, although I intend to upgrade to a HD PJ using HDMI once the X1 lamp goes. And at that point I will use HDMI for connections for at least video, but for now video will be component throughout. Will also get a BluRay or HD HTPC at the point but doesn't seem to be any reason for now as the PJ is only SD.

Anyway, my question.

The DVD player will be used for DVDs and CDs - what connections should I use to get the best audio quality for DVDs and CDs, should I use the player's on board DACs and transfer analogue for CD playback and then use digital for DVDs, or use the digital connections for all and let the receiver decode,or use the 5.1 outputs for DVD - its all a bit confusing and I don't want to shell out for all the possible connection leads if there is an obvious choice. I will probably make use of the player and receivers 'direct' settings to max the audio experience.

Thanks

Mark

Re: DVD to amp connections

Optical or coaxial for cd or dvd,75 ohm coax,no need to spend a fortune either.Mark Grant cables seem good, forum sponsors i believeYou could use the 5.1,but you'll need another 3 pairs of cable, only really necessary for HD sound on a non hdmi amp.
