suggestions please: non-scaling DVD player

Hi,

I'm looking for a DVD player at around the £100 mark.

However since I already have a DVDO HD+ scaler I'm not particularly interested in an upscaling player - just one that will work great with my existing kit.

Do you think that maybe I'd get a better basic player if I wasn't paying for a built in scaler?

Can anyone suggest what models to look for, or do you think that it's not relevant if it has a scaler or not?

TIA, Ian

Re: suggestions please: non-scaling DVD player

Some of the older flagship players from the likes of sony, toshiba and pioneer may do the trick, i'm guessing the Scalar would have a better de-interlacing than pretty much any player, so component/HDMI out with 576i would be ideal.

Also look at the oppo H980, it has digital out and component at 576i and was pretty much designed for use with an offboard scaler. Check the opposhop out i think there arround £100-150 mark.

You could go with any old player but as they say rubbish in, rubbish out, and the scaler will do its best when feed a good source.

Re: suggestions please: non-scaling DVD player

I am similarly trying to decide on a 480i/576i HDMI output DVD player as a transport for a soon to arrive Lumagen RadianceXD processor.

Has anyone compared the 480i/576i HDMI output of an Oppo DV980 vs a Pioneer DV-600AV?

In advance of receiving the Radiance, I have tried a Pioneer DV-600AV direct with my 50" Fuji Plasma and the 480i output looks quite soft compared to the DV-600AV's output at 720p / 1080i (yet the upscaled / de-interlaced output is poor as I would have expected from such a cheap player).

Clearly hoping that by sending a clean 480i/576i signal into Radiance for it to do the upscaling / deinterlacing that I will get the best of both worlds.

So, as a DVD HDMI transport, any views re Oppo DV980 vd Pioneer DV-600AV?

Any other players to consider as HDMI transport (not limited to £100 but hopefully don't need to go mad re the DVD player as the upscaling / deinterlacing will all be handled by the Radiance).

Thanks

John

Re: suggestions please: non-scaling DVD player

The DVD player is taking the digital data off the DVD, decoding it digitally, and sending the data digitally over the HDMI output. There is little point getting a very expensive player. A budget to mid range one with a quiet mechanism will perform perfectly.

The Oppo DV980 looks like what I'm after, a bit more than I intended to spend but hey!

I'll have a search around the forums to see what info about it I can find.
