Question I need a new DVD player. What do I get?

Hey folks,

I purchased a Samsung 40 inch 1080 LCD tv and have been meaning to get a new DVD player as my current one is a few years old.

Question is, what do I get? Not too keen on forking out for an HD DVD player just yet. I have seen a couple of DVD players like the Samsung DVD HD870 and the Sony DVP NS78 but not sure if these are good buys or should I bite the bullet and go for an HD DVD player?

Also, is there a difference when it says upscaling to 1080i as opposed to upscaling to 1080P?

Thanks

if you planning on spending a couple of hundred quid you would be silly not to get a hd dvd/ blue ray player, they have very good upscaling (look for anchor bay or reon chips) so will play you existing collection as well as any and will future proof you should you decide to go down the HD route, HD DVD is currently cheaper and better specced but decide based on which has the better films either way you will have a cracking future proof dvd player.

Im sure they would have said the same thing about Betamax VCR's back in the day.
If we have learned anything.....it's that nothing is guaranteed, and nothing lasts forever in this game.

Re: I need a new DVD player. What do I get?

I got a Samsung HD870 at Christmas. If you go the cheaper non-HD route, then I can't imagine you'll be disappointed in this player - it's the logical match for your Sammy TV. Look to pay around £50 (got mine on Amazon for £48)

First you need to decide whether you want to go the HD route now or wait.

See this post/thread for an excellent explanation of upscaling:
