I dont know if there are european version without SCART, but if your current firmware is BES980-00-1026 you have european device...
Sucessfull.

If use USB just follow this description from oppodigital web site.
For US version rename file to 980.BIN
For EU version rename file to 935.BIN

(or simply try to put both files to USB key as Lyris recommend. )

Look at display when process started. If display starts counting like 0/32..1/32 etc simply put out USB key and wait. Do not press any key, nor open tray. Simply wait.
When HDMI control blinks on display will be resolution like 1080xxxxx etc and finally display show NO DISC. This is end of upgrade. Note that tray will not be opened or closed when process started and use of USB for FW upgrade.

Then you can check your new firmware by pressing Setup and 9210. Exit with Setup.

At last run Setup as upgrading process resets values to default.

Maybe one can ask : WHAT WITH REGION CODE ?

On my unit (EU version with SCART) region code WAS NOT CHANGED during upgrade process.

Good luck

Re: New Oppo 980H

Ok, so I just updated my firmware and everything worked fine. I was going through restoring all my settings, and discovered that some of the available options have changed unexpectedly. Some of these changes are not too bad and I'd just like a bit of clarification, others have really p***ed me off.

1. Why has the "16:9 Wide/Auto" mode gone, to be replaced with "Wide/SQZ"? Does this do the same thing?

2. I assume I should set the 'Deinterlacing mode' to 'Auto', right? I usually watch PAL DVDs on the player - would 'Film' do me better?

3. (the biggie for me) Where has the 'Audio Delay' option gone??? I bought this player to go with my LCD telly partly because it had some rave reviews but in no small part because I could delay the audio output to bring the sound in sync with the picture on my telly. If you look back in this thread you'll see where I was asking about it. Now I install the new firmware the option has gone!! Why???

Oh, and my OSD font is different now (and I think it's horrible).

On the plus side, the PAL nastiness I was seeing on 4:3 dvds now seems to be gone, so at least my girlfriend can watch Friends now without complaining that Monica's hair looks blurry. At least she's happy...

What are people's opinions?

Re: New Oppo 980H

Some thoughts/enhancements to be submitted to Oppo technicians for further improvements:

1- if an audio cd is insered, add an option to automatically disable the video chipset (now everytime I change cd I have to press again the audio only button)

2- enhable if possible the high speed rate of the USB 2.0 port now very limited on the bitrate it can takes

3- show the title of the track on the OSD / the name of the folder for a navigation without the TV turned on (the pioneer 470s -mediatek- I had was able to do this, I guess it is only a firmware code to add)

4- add a browser (now it is only for USB input if I am not mistaken): having the possibility to browse the contents of a CD/DVD (now I have a cd audio containing also some clips and I cannot access to them!)

5-add the function GO TO a certain time in the video you are watching (also this option was included the pioneer 470s -mediatek-, I guess it is only a firmware code to add)

what do you think?

Re: New Oppo 980H

Dear Oppo 980H owners,

Thursday 3 I will send the enhancement requests of the Oppo 980H owners to Oppo.

By this time please feel free to add/correct/modify the summary of the request below, thanks! (also present at the forums http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...6#post13518016 and http://www.quellicheilpc.com/forum/v...hp?f=6&t=45691 and http://www.avmagazine.it/forum/showt...=1#post1380560 )

5- add the function GO TO a certain time in the video you are watching (also this option was included the pioneer 470s -mediatek-, I guess it is only a firmware code to add)

6- If you know you are playing a DVD-audio or SACD have a separate setting to permit that to go out at 1080i. I use a video processor so 480i is best for video.

7- Also DIM control should by "sticky" - stored in NV memory...
It is frustrating each time after power on go to setup DIM control to ON and then DIM.

Re: New Oppo 980H

Tuleggi: Oppo have asked me for feedback on how to improve this and future players. I've made them aware of your requests.

Quote:
1. Why has the "16:9 Wide/Auto" mode gone, to be replaced with "Wide/SQZ"? Does this do the same thing?
Yes, that's the same thing - just a different name.

Quote:

Yes, AUTO is the general purpose setting and is what the player was locked into before. To see the difference between AUTO and FILM, put in a PAL disc and go to the scrolling end credits and switch between the modes. Notice how much extra resolution comes through in the FILM mode.

I didn't notice that myself but have mentioned it to Oppo. Hopefully it comes back...

Re: New Oppo 980H

Ok Lyris, no problem!

This post aim is to collect in one page the request, than I can send these comment as a normal user and you do the official interface!

Some of the mentionned enhancement should not be really difficult to implement via firmware since in other similar players are there... if I have time I will try to implement them myself, maybe with the help of some good firmare modders... or even better, Oppo will officially take our suggestions into account

PS: I liked very much your review on the player with the new firmware, thanks!

So, since I mainly watch PAL movies on the player I should keep this set to 'FILM' to really get the benefit from the new 2:2 capability, right? Or does the player now correctly detect what it's playing when set to 'auto', meaning I shouldn't have to tell it each time? Or am I just being really dumb...?

Really appreciate this forum - by far the most helpful I've ever posted in. Thankyou all!

Re: New Oppo 980H

Good question, and yes, that's right. If you only watch PAL Films, just leave it on Film mode. That *forces* film mode on all the time.

The "Auto" mode is better at detecting between Film and Video than it used to be, too. It's usually pretty successful, but once or twice I've seen it slip up during scrolling credits at the end of a film. So, it wouldn't be a bad choice either but if you don't watch anything else, just leave it set to Film.

Re: New Oppo 980H

Hi guys,
I have several problems that want to share (980H European):
- At the analog audio output, first notes of the tracks are missed - this happens only with CD tracks that has no delay in song start. It is OK via HDMI though. Last firmware (935) does not fixed it. This problem was already reported somewhere I think.

- Connecting a TV via HDMI introduced a hum at the analog output. Audio Only mode did not resolved it. It is present even with the TV being switched off.

- The player does not support Cyrillic fonts (Windows-1251 in particular) which is a problem for me as I use it in BG. It concerns DivX/Xvid movies with text subtitles.

- I have problems using IDX+SUB subtitles. Because of the previous issue (lack of Cyrillic fonts) I decided to convert my Xvid movie subtitles to image VobSub (IDX+SUB) format. The manual says that IDX is also supported. I converted my subtitles using SubtitleCreator and they worked fine on the PC. But when I tried the movie on 980 via USB the player stuck at the moment of first subtitle to appear and then restarted :O.
I wonder if anybody ever tried using IDX subtitles and was it successful.

- Playing DivX/Xvid movies via USB port was generally not very successful for me. I'm not very happy with it as this was one of the reasons to buy this player. I experienced frame dropping, sticking on some frame for few seconds and then resuming playback, etc. Changing HDMI resolution to lowest helped a bit to remedy the problems, but did not solved it. I have idea to try also different(faster) USB devices.

- Audio playback via USB works great. Only one comment here - I wanted to have continues scroll when I press and hold the Up/Down buttons. It is really a must with a big number of songs.

Will be thankful if someone has experience in solving some of the above mentioned problems. Ideas are also welcome.

Funnily enough I have this problem on the HDMI port (I haven't tried any other connection). Oppo told me it's a known issue (which isn't fixed in the new firmware).

The only work-around is to return to the start...

Really REALLY irritating!

Re: New Oppo 980H

Hello,
could anyone please confirm that the 980 only outputs composite video through the scart? Even if you don't connect this way, can you see an option in the menu to select what you want to output via the scart, or is it greyed out and non-selectable?
It's just that I might occasionally need to connect to a TV with a RGB scart input.
Thanks.
