OPPO 971 or 981 for HD ready?

I'm on the verge of getting my first LCD (LXD700 or D3000) & by coincidence my DVD player has just passed away! So I need a new player and these Oppo's seem very well rated, but, is it worth getting the 981 over the 971 to partner a telly that's only "HD ready" [although both tellies can accept 1080p]

Also does anyone know if these are HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) compatible ie; will they work via Sonys Theatre Sync or something similar?

These questions I could also ask of the Denon 1730/1930.

If your set is 1080p, with HDMI it's worth going for the 981.

The sets I'm looking at are only 32" 720p/1080i but will accept a 1080p image and do stuff with it

But what is the actual resolution of the panel? All you've said so far is that it supports 720p/1080i/p inputs, which is fairly normal for recent sets even if they aren't the full 1920x1080.

Re: OPPO 971 or 981 for HD ready?

According to CRT PROJECTORS the 981 will work fine into a 720p set

Looking a the Oppo site it would appear that the 971s have been replaced by the 981

Then 1080p can potentially have an advantage over 720p with it, since its native resolution lies inbetween the two.
