Oppo 981 & Sharp LC-42XD1E picture judder

Hi,

I know some of you forum gentlemen (and ladies) have an Oppo 981 connected to a Sharp LC42XD1E or other Sharp LCD's. I was just wondering if any of you have noticed a slight picture judder while watching DVD's (this only seems to be evident during a panning shot on DVD (have tried several DVD's both PAL and NTSC).

I have the Oppo connected via HDMI (the cable provided in the Oppo box) to Ext6 on the Sharp. I have read through several forum posts on the settings for both the Oppo and the Sharp and feel that everything is set up correctly.

The Oppo is running the Beta firmware and is set up as follows :

Picture output : YCbCr 4:4:4
: 1080p

On the Sharp I have selected

Signal matrix : YCbCr 4:4:4
Colour matrix : ITU709
Dynamic range : Enhanced
Auto view : Enable

Does anyone have any opinions as to whether these are the 'optimal' settings? Is the Sharp upscaling the picture as welll as the Oppo as this could be an issue (all LCD's upscale the picture don't they?)?

Any help is much appreciated.

Sturm.

Try the same discs again without the upscaling function on.
IE. Set the player to the same res as the disc (480 for NTSC or 576 for PAL).

In most instances I find player scaling does more harm than good and personally experienced judder from NTSC discs using upscaling.
YMMV but its worth a try.

Re: Oppo 981 & Sharp LC-42XD1E picture judder

Aniki,

Cheers I'll give that a go and have a good play around tonight. However I bought the Oppo to specifically upscale my DVD collection to 1080p onto my new LCD as everyone seemed to be raving about it.

Does anyone else have any experience of judder issues with either the Oppo or the Sharp?

Is there a way of turing the upscaling off on the Sharp? (if indeed it does this).

No. All LCD's & Plasmas have to scale if their resolution is greater than that of the inut signal. Otherwise youd have a picture in the centre of your screen surrounded by black borders on all four sides.

Have you set the output to Auto rather than selecting NTSC or PAL on the Oppo?

trailer,

Thanks for your input on this. I have just checked and yes the Oppo is set to auto but only because I watch both NTSC and PAL DVD's. Are you the same, have you multiregion discs, and if so have you statically set the Oppo to NTSC or PAL. My collection is 80/20 (NTSC / PAL).

I use auto too. this works for me as I have a lot of multi region discs.

Another thing is to check it is set to Video 2. Try turning off all the noise reduction/sharpness options if they aren't already.

trailer,

Thanks again for your input. I've just checked and my Oppo is set to Video 1 so I will change this and see if it affects the picture. I had already turned off the noise reduction and sharpness (been burnt before with these).
