£9 DVD Player!

I'm sure most of you will have heard that Asda are selling a DVD player for just £9.
Well, here is my mini review.....

The player in a Durabrand model 'compact' player DVD-1005.

I bought one for my inlaws as their Sony DVD recorder refuses any PC or home created discs (unless they were made on the Sony unit). So for £9 I was just looking for an occasional player so they could watch family camcorder stuff etc.

I was plesantly suprised to find that for the tiny purchase price you actually get a full function remote, MP3 playback, Digital coax out, SVHS out AND full RGB scart out.

You even get batteries for the remote!

As soon as I got it home I unplugged my big chunky expensive scart from my Toshiba SD-350 and shoved it into the durabrand, grabbed a range of discs (DVD-R, DVD+R DVD+RW and some originals) and switched it on.

I could tell the picture was going to be much better than I had expected even before I'd loaded a disc, the menu was colourful but crisp with no visible flicker or colour flare. When I tried all the DVDs they were ALL great!

The audio via scart was good too, not as good as the picture but very acceptable. I didn't try the digital out.

The only criticism of this little player is the top loading design, it's not a great hassle to slam a little lid closed but it does limit the positioning of the unit.

You don't get DivX or Progscan but it's only £9!

I was so impressed I went back and bought another for my sons bedroom, and I won't get mad if he breaks it, cos it's £9!

Anyboby else got one?

Re: £9 DVD Player!

I'm waiting till next month when they're going to be given away in packets of cornflakes. Only problem is there's not much room left in the packets for the cornflakes . . .

Yep. I bought one.

Seems more than fine. Was even set on region 0 out of the box.

Re: £9 DVD Player!

Managed to get my hands on one - no complaints for £9.

Everything you need to get up and running with DVD; apart from a TV!

I'd have paid an extra quid for a built in screen!!

Re: £9 DVD Player!

But are they any good?

I need a cheap secondary one as the 2 I have upstairs are not working quite as I would like. One of them is about as old as you can get for a DVD player and then other one I think is just dusty!

Re: £9 DVD Player!

hmmm, £9 is not too bad I guess... but does it play both blu-ray and hd-dvd disks or do I have to buy the expensive £18 model to get these features?

Re: £9 DVD Player!

Unbelievable! The cheapest CD players cost about a pound more!

Its frightening to think that in several years time we'll see that same thing happening with HD players!

Re: £9 DVD Player!

Weird isn't it, when you buy a £9 DVD player to play a £14.99 DVD disk on?

Completely off-topic I know ... but I've bought well over 300 DVD's in the last year and Firefly boxset was the only one which cost me more than a fiver.
With all the money i've saved ( and using female logic ), I should now be rich enough to buy myself a decent turntable at the Bristol show. Perhaps if I buy a few of these £9 dvd players, I'll have saved enough to afford a haircut and some shoes?

Re: £9 DVD Player!

I was tempted but thought I'd leave it another 6 months for the new model to come out with upscaling hdmi.

Re: £9 DVD Player!

Do you think they would take £8 for a cash sale?

Re: £9 DVD Player!

woh. When you say it's set to region 0 do you mean it's a multi-region player? cos i've got some region 1 dvds that i can't play!

The cheap ones don't always play DTS.
