1920 / 2910 arghhhhh!

good evening,

Wed 31st of this month is my D day. I will order a Pioneer 427 Plasma, Denon 2807 Reciever, B&W mt 20 speakers, the problem is, I am stuck between wich dvd player to get.
I will use the player primarily to watch dvd, but the ability to play a cd/sacd decently would be a distinct bonus.
my specific questions are:

is the picture and sound quality realy £200 better on a 2910. and is it a truly noticable difference?

Are the hdmi issues between the above components now sorted?

As the Pioneer is not 1080p compatible is the 1930 a pointless buy anyway and if so should i look at a 1920 (if i can find one)?

any views on this issue from owners would be greatly appreciated as MY HEAD HURTS!

Re: 1920 / 2910 arghhhhh!

I have just bought the 1730 for 115 pounds great sound and vision. Doesnt have sacd/dvd-a though. Of what i have read on the net the 1930 does have a great picture and simillar or a bit better than the 1730 due to the faroudja deinterlacing chip. The 2930 is suppose to use new technology and picture is stunning. But alot more expensive and supposedly some issues playing non original burned discs.

Re: 1920 / 2910 arghhhhh!

Not sure how much your plasma cost:

But general rule of thumb, the components should be able to take advantage of each other, i.e a very expensive screen is not displaying it's true potential with a cheap (video noisy) DVD player.

I decided HD is a long way off, I bought a Pioneer 989 14 months ago, i still don't see the HDDVD or BlueRay players I seen on demo match or better the 1080i upscaling of the Pioneer 989, yes I have a very good 1080p screen it cost £2k (W40).

My Pioneer 989 cost a lot at the time £770, but where it scores over the cheaper rivals, there is zero picture noise when upscaling and there are no video processing problems the cheaper and nearest more expensive rivals suffer from.

I think you have to demo DVD players with your Plasma model and judge for yourself whether you want a cheap DVD player to last a few years until the BR HDDVD battle is resolved (i.e probably dual format players) or buy a slighly more expensive Denon 2030.

The Pioneer 989 i have been told is available now for £550 if you shop around, but maybe thats beyond your budget.

Cheers and good luck

Mike Paul
