Component to Scart - no pin 8 signalling :(

I have a DVD player connected to my Toshiba widescreen TV via a component to scart adapter. The dvd player setup is set to 16:9 screen with Pal video.

There are two issues:

1. When I switch the dvd on it doesn't signal my TV to switch to the correct input. My TV does this when I switch my other scart connected equipment on, e.g. DVD player and Sky+

2. The dvd player doesn't signal my TV to go widescreen. The TV is set to auto-size so when I watch Sky+ it auto-switches to 16:9 widescreen, and when I watch terrestrial channel 5 it auto-switches to auto-size to show the 4:3 screen as fullscreen. It all works perfectly except for the dvd player signal which stays at 4:3 for some reason.

Any ideas on how to make the dvd player (or a scart adapter) to fix the above issues?

It's because the signal required can not be sent down the component cable. Pin 8 has a low voltage DC supply added to it from the source equipment and this only comes via the source equipments own scart outlet.

Yes, there are lots of pins in a Scart cable which carry all sorts of information, along with component video in RGB form. You've only got 3 cables in a component cable, so you don't get all the information on the other pins (like your pin 8 switching).

I really cant find any info on the net anywhere on how to auto-switch a component->scart input. Surely there must be some sort of connector or AV box that will set pin 8 high when a video signal starts and then set pin 8 low when the signal disappears?

Do you notice a big jump in PQ between component and rgb then......??

If not, just use the scart output on the dvd player....problem solved.
If i remember correctly, toshiba's convert all input signals to s-vid quality anyway ( or they use to ).

If you did find a box that would do that, think about where it would set the pin... that's right, on the scart socket, where your component leads are not connected. So even if such a thing did exist, how would setting the scart pin high (which would simulate a signal on the scart socket) help your TV detect and enable the component input?

Unless your TV can detect a component input and can switch to the right input, you're not going to be able to fake it with a signal on the scart socket. At best, you'll get your TV switching to the scart socket instead of component input. That's why there's no such thing as the magic AV box you are hoping for. As the component standard doesn't have anything for detecting a signal, most TVs just don't seem to support it.

You would probably be better off getting one of the various aftermarket programmable remotes where you can program a key to send all the right button presses for you in the form of a macro. It will have the same effect as turning on your player and automatically switching to the component input.
