DVD v TV Aspect Ratio

Out of curiosity, does anybody know why a film watched via dvd will show in letterbox, whilst the same film broadcast on TV will fill the whole screen?

Re: DVD v TV Aspect Ratio

Probably because when broadcast on TV they've cropped the edges and zoomed to make it 1.78:1 (16:9). And in doing so destroyed the aspect ratio from the original 2.35:1.
