Would it not be better waiting until the HD DVD Players come out rather than buying an upscaling one?

The guy asked for a DVD player not a HD DVD player. The above DVD players will outperform a HD DVD player when playing a DVD.

Thanks in advance | I'm making serious plans to import the new Panasonic DVD-S99EG-S from Germany within the next 6 months. According to Panasonic.de website, it will be released next month.

The HD-A1 does a great job of upscaling and would outperform most SD dvd players apart from the top-end stuff- so its worth keeping in mind. |

Personally for a budget of £200 I would not worry about upscaling as its probably not going to be any better than the job your scaling chips in your plasma/lcd. (Hence why Nic mentioned the onkyo/Denon.. but they are alot more than £200)

Matt | I'll echo those comments, upscaling built into players isn't worth bothering with until you are looking at the £1000+ price bracket. For £200 I would concentrate on getting a player that gives a good non-scaled picture. A second hand Arcam DV78 might be possible near that price.

The thing is no one has asked what will you connect it too? and why do you want to use HDMI ( HIGH DEFINITION MULTIMEDIA INTERFACE) for DVD a standard defintiion format??????????
HDMI IS NOT BETTER and upscaling? How does that benefit you?
I agree with crustyloafer (it had to happen) look for a good DVD player like an Arcam or high end Denon etc not one with lots of marketig man rubbish and poor electronics

All this upscaling/hdmi that the industry is telling us we must have is por advice. My player (Sony NS92) upscales through hdmi, but the picture through component is better.
Do a comprehensive comparison yourself and you will see.

Oppo 971H | Oppo 971H are DVI only but supply a cable to convert to HDMI.
I've considered the Oppo, but since my most basic requirement is full HDMI interface, I will pass on it until Oppo release a version of the 971H that do.
A very similar machine with HDMI is the soon-to-be-released Panasonic S99 from Germany, the successor to the S97 which I've posted about earlier in this thread.
