Subtitles appearing off screen? Help!!

Hi there.

Not sure if i'm in the right forum but I guess it may be a problem that several of you have come across?

I have a JVC THA-75R all in one system connected via scart RGB to a Panasonic TX36PL32 CRT. When playing back certain DVD's (such as House of Flying Daggers), if I set the screen to the correct ratio (widescreen in this case) there are black bars at the top and bottom as expected (aspect ratio 2.35:1). The subtitles are displayed in the black bars at the bottom but if there is more than one line they 'fall off' the bottom of the screen. The only way to make all the subtitles visible is to set the aspect ratio to make the picture smaller such that the black bars are larger and there are then black bars down the side!!!! I can't seem to work out if there is a way to fix this, which isn't helped by the fact that I'm unable to locate my tv's instruction manual!!!

Is there a way to sort this either via the tv or the DVD player or is this simply the way the DVD has been authored and I'm stuck with it?

Any help is much appreciated!!

Nobody got any bright ideas? Anyone else got House of Flying Daggers on DVD, can you get all the subtitles on screen at once without making the picture tiny?

does your tv have a 16:9 setting? Widescreen setting is usually not quite the same shape, therefore you should see all subtitles when set to 16:9
