Acer pd116 and panasonic s97 connection problems

Hi
Newbie here
Trying to upscale dvds
I am trying to connect my Panny S97 DVD player to my Acer pd116 projector through the HDMI output on the S97 to VGA input on the projector. The cable is HDMI to DVI, with an adapter on the dvi end to VGA.
The Acer does say it is HD compatible, but the VGA is the only input on the back that is usuable for HD(?)
Have tried different cables/ adapters but nothing. no lights on the DVD (problem?), projector just keeps searching.....(problem?)
Does anyone have an idea where the problem could lie, or are the units just not compatible
The picture from RGB is excellent.... but would it be better from HDMI.
Sound goes from optical output ...happy with that.
Any advice would be appreciated
Regards

Sorry, but there is no way you can connect the HDMI output of any device to a VGA input of another device with just a cable! HDMI is a purely digital connection and VGA is an analog interface. As such, between these two you need a complex electronics circuit not just a cable. DVI on the other had, can include BOTH digital and analog copies of the same signal (what most graphics card outputs give you) and that is why it is possible to use a converter to connect it to VGA.
I think the best solution for you is to stick with the component connection...
