Kenwood DVD player +ethernet problems

Hi I have just bought a Kenwood DVF-N7080 dvd player and am having problems getting the server to work. I tried standard ethernet cable going into an ethernet switch which goes into the back of the computer (running xp) as I also have adsl running. The tv screen comes up with could not detect server. So I have just bought a category 6 ethernet cross cable thinking it might be that but is still doesn't work. The software was loaded onto the computer and works fine. I have also tried using auto and manual ip addresses to no avail. Has anybody any ideas?
