I have the Samsung 850 going to my Panny ldx52 and to be honest there is not a lot of difference between 1080i, 720p and 576p.
720p seems to be a bit sharper but that is about it.It is a great picture though IMHO.

So are you playing just regular DVD's on it or are they HD disc's?
how would you rate the HD DVD pic to the sky pic obviously better but lots or only just?

This is just playing normal DVD's.You can't play HD DVD's on the 850.
It is not a HD DVD player(they are not out in this country yet) but one that artificially outputs 720p/1080i.
Compared to Sky it is a bit better but there is not a huge difference.I am very happy with the sky picture on my Panasonic and the Samsung one is sharper and more detailed, about 20% better if you want me to put a figure on it.

Hi
I have never heard of a Jedi Wookie!!
Due to the nature of HDMI and HDCP handshake, you need to speak to someone with knowledge of the panel as a player that works great on HDMI with say a Samsung may not look so good with the Sony. A good dealer maybe a good place to start.
Unfortunately it is the way of the HDMI side!!!!

D Sidious

i've got the Sammy HD950 going through a dlp r/pro. Great picture via hdmi. Very crisp (may be a little too sometimes). Not much difference between 565/720/1080. I prefer 720p. Good player for £100. But remember it is a £100 player, not the latest (soon to be released) HD player, so don't expect miricles.

This is true. What is it they say about these HD TV's? " Feed them well" well, if you've got good a quality DVD like Revenge of teh Sith or Kingdom of Heaven you'll never go back to regular DVD players!

Any one have any ideas what the difference would be between this oppo one and a next gen one if any?
Think im prob best wait 2 months as when sky release there HD content and box im sure the dvd player guys will flood the market with dvd players too...
(as for a jedi wookie, there isnt one but how cool would it be if there was!!!)

ill try asking here, think its worth while replacing my old but expensive denon2800mk2 for a £100 hdmi player? if so which one? the tosh 350 or sammy 850? the denon will then be relagated to cd duties!

Well that depends on how large your wallet is. I would immagine the new HD dvd players will be £400+ to start off with and the disks to go with them £25 ( like dvds were back in 1998, ouch i remember). So if you want to enjoy the disks you already have in a great quality for the next 12 months then splash out a ton a buy the sammy 850. (£80 in richer sounds) If not, then wait a year and grab a HD player.

I guess the biggest problem here is the format that will be used for tur HD..
either blue ray or the toshiba format cant remember what its called..
The first generation of dvd players I think will be both a technology and financial risk...
The only real solution I think will be a duel format player to account for both
but the cost of that would be huge...
So I think as rich sps says the sammy is the best bet in the short run
and within 12 months I think we will be able to see the direction HD DVD is going.
Thanks guys my decision is made the sammy it is....

Ive owned a Samsung 835, with faroudja upscaling, dvi output........and the image was excellent.
upscaling actually worked brilliantly.
I say that, as I now have a Sony ns92, and its great, on component, but on hdmi upscaling, there is no noticeable difference at different res.s
go for faroudja processing.
now I know why its so well respected. it works !
