Upgrade from DV4100OSE for HD plasma?

Hi there,

I'm in the process of specing out my new HT system and am confused about what I need to go for in the DVD department. So far I'm planning on getting a Pioneer 436XDE along with a Yam RX-V4600 and I want to get a disc player that will give me better than average CD replay too.

I can spend upto a grand but would like to do it for less if possible. I already have a Marantz DV4100OSE and wanted to know what this will look like if I just let the Pioneer media box scale it? Is it important getting an upscaling HDMI equiped DVD player?

I auditioned a Denon 2910 and 3806 today and wasn't impressed with the CD 2-ch quality. Once we plugged in an Arcam DV88 things imediately improved. I only tried this to see an improvement in audio over the Denon as it was half price. I also wanted to try the Yam 4600 but it had a fault that meant the right channel was louder than left. :-( Will have to go back.

Should I be trying to audition a Marantz DV7600 which is supposed to be a good all rounder?

Any help/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I have the 4100ose and an early upscaling DVI DVD player (non HDCP ). I still use the Marantz for most of my watching - probably due to the fact the remote from my amp controls it too - and can say that except for really well mastered material it gives nothing away to the digital path. I run both sources into an Iscan HD scaler.

If it was my money I'd wait until there was a creditable Hi Def product on the market before making another purchase and keep the 4100 for music and replace it with a CD player when it finally gives out.

What are the benefits of using a scaler and what sort of price range can you get a future proof one for?

With Sky-HD coming out this year and my only other video source being a DVD player, is there a point in me getting a scaler if I can get an upscaling DVD player?
