Panasonic DVD/VCR player won't play tapes

I just bought a new Panasonic DVD/VCR player but when I play my old VCR tapes the screen is snowy, even the newer ones I try. Could someone help me out here? Should I return it?

Sounds like it might be dirty or faulty video heads or possibly a tape path or compatibility issue.

First check - Is it OK when you record and play a tape on the Panasonic?

I'll try recording something...I also would like to mention that it plays prerecorded tapes fine.

Tried to record with VHS still snowy

I've tried recording a program but the screen is still snowy.
Could a new vcr get dirty heads from an old tape?
