Connecting toshiba sd220e via component

Just bought myself a new plasma, and as the dvd recorder doesn't have component out i bought a £60 scart lead to replace my £15 job, and amazed at the sharper image it provided. but I also treated myself to an ixos component lead for the toshiba, which has component out, although the picture is very good, it doesn't seem as good as when i had scart, also it shows up the solarisation a lot more, i was just wondering as it is admittedly a cheap player, would upgrading to another slightly more top end one be the answer, I was looking at the Harmon Kardon one that play have on offer (multiregion, pal/ntsc progressive scan)
Any ideas on improvement? I fiddled with the display settings and although it looks fine, i think it could look better, or were my expectations too high?
