samsung 935 help

thinking of getting this player
can anyone add any pros and cons to it
also been looking at denon a11 which is a lotlot more money
which to dvi to my ae500
most of my dvds are region 1
which one will be the best ??

You can't really begin to compare a £1500 player with a £150 player!

By the sounds of it the A11 is great. But then it should be!

If you mainly use Region 1 disks the 935 is a pretty good choice through DVI. Oddly it doesn't support 720p in 50hz, so there can be a bit of stutter in pans on R2 material. How much you notice it seems to vary between idividuals.

DVI output is impressive from the Samsung and there are plenty of users here who have one. Personally I didn't really like it though. I had two and both were a bit flaky. Often they wouldn't eject the movie, or I got no sound, or the player would just jump to the start of the disk. Not heard of others with similar problems so I might have been very unlukcy.

My other gripes are that the player has really annoying very bright blue lights. They looked cool at first then just drove me nuts, there is one that stays on even when the DVD player is off!

And the fast forward/rewind buttons on the remote are also the chapter buttons. A crazy idea and very annoying. IMO.

Have a look for threads on the Yamakawa 365Divix, if you don't mind importing it, it is superior to the 935 and probably a little cheaper even posted from Germany. (try computeruniverse.net). A great player and a steal at the price.

If you have the budget for an A11 also consider the Pioneer 868 it comes in the middle ground on pricing. There is also a thread listing all DVI players due soon somewhere on here...

more towards the 868 hdmi to dvi then den then the samsung
i have a sony 930 and would like a sharper image
will the 868 be better ??
heard a lot of great reviews ,
more into piture than the sound
just want the best image i can get for the ae500

DVI from all three players should give you a sharper image.

It is all down to what you want to spend.

My feeling is that on an AE500 you won't come close to noticing £1400 worth of difference between the A11 and the 935.

I'd sell the AE500 and add the £1400 to the money and get a nice DLP projector.

The Samsung implements and uses the Faroudja chip in a crappy way. It confuses video and film, uses BOB and WEAVE at the wrong times etc. When it does get it right, it's okay, but not better than so many others. It doesn't help it that it has DVI if what it outputs looks bad.

I thought I'd better jump in to defend the Sammy 935 ! I also have an AE500 and for the money the 935 is a steal. I've had no operational problems, the region free hack works and the picture quality is about 75% of a decent HTPC from the DVI output.
It's far from perfect, the remote sucks, the scaling chip adds some noise and the 935 definitely crushes blacks. That's the last thing you need with an AE500 ! But if I didn't have a HTPC to compare it with I'd be blissfully ignorant. Also at £142 delivered the 935 is less than half the price of just the video card in my HTPC.

I'd say that Sony DVPNS-730 is a better buy although it doesn't have DVI. It's output via component is excellent, and it has a great deinterlacer that always gets it right. It's about the same price as the Samsung. DVI doesn't automatically mean good. It depends on what you output.
