Denon 1600 vs HK 2550

Any opinions on which is the better player? I'm looking to spend 300 euro max - so (now) both fall into this category.

I'm outputting to a Loewe Aconda with no progressive option, and I'll be using it as a music source. DVDA is not an issue.

Cheers for any advice.

Hi, I'm currently waiting for my HK 2550 to turn up, i'll report back with my impressions of it when I get it and had some time to play with it. Apparently its a very good player.

I was also interested in the Denon but in the end I went with the HK, due to hearing too many horror stories regarding Denon players here on the forums and elsewhere.

Cheers

Well, not seen the Denon, but i got the HK 2550 last week (with some advice from peeps like hornydragon). Very impressed so far, dvds look great in progressive scan through component, and audio playback is also cool. The other thing i like is being able to put 6 gig of MP3s onto a DVD, and get about 5 days of music to play with.

I've also got a 2550 and its very good, although its not perfect.

Firstly it takes a very long time to read discs, that as such isnt a prob as it give me time to lower my screen but it does have you standing there watching the display wondering whats happening or whether theres a RCE problem.

Secondly, the layer change on mine is very noticable. Both these issues may be to do with the multiregion firmware, I think theres more than one type.

Also, and this is a minor issue really, is the backlight remote which is a very good idea, unfortunately it illuminates the buttons but you still cant see what each button does. This is compounded by the pause and the useful dimmer button being well hidden.

I am still very pleased with it and playback is noticably better than my Tosh 220e player & Philips DVDR70 recorder (no suprise there ) and I'd still buy one now.

I would like a less obvious layer change but there are lot worse playback problems out there suffered by other machines that would annoy me more.

Thanks for the replies.

hornydragon - I haven't used component with the Loewe, so it would be RGB.

The new model HK's are out in Germany, so the HK is looking attractive at €249. Denon's €299. I do like the option of upgrading the HK for progressive, if I eventually change my display and the easy route of modding it to multiregion. Also as I said in my initial post CD playback is important.

Looks like it might be the HK...

One other thing I'm looking at is the new HK DVD22, it's retail is €249.

It's seems to be the DVD31 without DVDA. Similar to the DVD30/25 relationship.

So it may be taking the place of both the DVD21 and DVD25. With a retail price at a level of the discounted DVD25. Any thoughts?

Is it prog scan? DVD21 wasnt and 25 was. I would expect HK to get a DVD30 with DVi out inside6-12 months anyway or HDMI and add HDMI to the 8500 replacement and maybe the 7500 replacement.

From what I read from a German dealer site it is PAL/NTSC prog scan.

Seems to be the DVD25 replacement, as the only difference between it and the new DVD31 is DVDA

Same As DVD30 and DVD24 then Hmmm wonder if it has DACS from 506 guess it will. I have to get hold of the Harman Rep soon.
