Sony HXD770/870/970/1070 lock up problem

Ok returned home this afternoon and turned on TV but found blank screen on input from Sony. Sony was apparently on with blue HDD light on but displaying date and time only on integral display? Sony would not respond to any button on remote or on front panel including standby.

So resorted to something I only experienced before with a now defunct cheapo STB and turned off at wall. Turned on and Sony briefly got "Update" in display and then performed normally.

Any ideas why this happened?

This isnt going to explain the problem, but if it makes you feel more assured,My 860 did this once, several months ago.It was new at the time and I reset it exactly as you have.I have had no trouble since!

It makes no difference as the only difference is the size of the HDD, this is why I addressed all 4 types as such a problem if common will be experienced by users of all typesll (and the Pioneer 550 I believe)
