Sony RDR HXD 870 can't read CDs

Hi everybody,

I wanted to upgrade my DVD recorder to the latest firmware but I couldn't have the recorder to read the CDs I burnt.

... a few days later I notice that in fact my recorder can't read any CD of any kind. In fact I never tried before to read a CD on this player.

It reads and burns any kind of DVDs ...

Do you think that the the drive is dead ?
Is it possible that when I turned it to multiregion with my Kameleon remote I did something wrong that made the recorder stop playing CDs ?
Is it possible to buy a new drive and replace the old one ?

Is there another way to upgrade the firmware ?

Re: Sony RDR HXD 870 can't read CDs

none of the suggestions you have made can be symptomatic to my knowledge

it is possible that it is faulty but unlikely that its a region free issue

the fact that it reads and burns a dvd should make it possible to drop the file onto a blank dvdr disk , preferably a +RW disk and upgrade it to v1.65 that way

only the disk method exists for updating the firmware , but I dont see why you cannot use a dvdr disk instead of a cdr or cdrw disk. I usually use a good quality cdrw disk to do this task myself

I assume that you have tested commercial cd,s on it ?

I also assume you have finalised the cd disks on your pc ( one session only ,not multiple sessions , and recorded as a data disk ? )

ie:- maybe its your burning software or something else you are doing wrong at fault ? it is more lilkely to be your burning of disks causing the issue than an actual fault on the machine itself

if it fails to play a commercial cdda disk then it may well be faulty , but as long as it can use a dvd +RW disk then you should manage the upgrade ok

Re: Sony RDR HXD 870 can't read CDs

Thanks ramjet,

I have burnt several "fimeware CDRs" and tried with a CD-RW.
I burnt them "my way" at first then using the 2 methods provided on the special topic on the forum

That's later that I found that the unit couldn't read CDs anymore : no mp3 CDR, no commercial CDs, absolutly nothing on CD.
The drive spins/click/spins/click ... and it never writes anything more than load ... then ejects the CD saying it is not compatible.

I assume the drive might be CD-dead ?

Isn't it possible to replace the drive ? I did it several times on old Mac laptops. I suppose that it is even simpler on a Sony recorder. And the Sony regional repair unit is at 10 minutes from my home. Years ago I had bought them Sony spare parts, the only problem is that they are pretty expensive.

I have no DVD+RW but DVD-RWs.
I'll try that but I have no idea on how to create an iso DVD-RW with the upgrade file ... on a Mac with Toast ?

Re: Sony RDR HXD 870 can't read CDs

You've still not mentioned whether commercial CD's work to eliminate the possibility that this is simply a compatibility issue.

If they don't:

CD's are read by a separate co-mounted laser, so the symptoms suggest that the laser is U/S.

Replacements are not economic. preposterously expensive and difficult to get.

At least the unit is otherwise working.
I'm not so sure it will be possible to upgrade via DVD- I think CD may be mandated - but there is no harm in trying.

It doesn't read commercial CDs.

The unit has absolutely no problem reading and burning DVDs.
I burn approx 10 to 15 DVDs a week from the HDD because I read them on my laptop or another DVD player.

I wanted to upgrade the firmware because my unit has the old bug of inverted L/R channels when burning from HDD to DVD.
