Cheers, that looks awesome, we're gonna give it a go.

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games etc and Firmware thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
How did you guys get Doom running?
I've d/led and stuck a .nds and a .wad of the Edge card. .The .wad doesn't show and the .nds boots but crashes at the first loading screen.
Pocket Physics is good. I'm trying to get one of those paint packages but the links aren't working for me

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games etc and Firmware thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
DSdoom is a game engine - it provides a program to play Doom levels, but it doesn't include any levels itself. More importantly, you need all the sounds, sprites, and other graphics that make up the Doom environment.
So to play DSdoom, you need one of the main Doom date files from id Software - either doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad or plutonia.wad from one of the commercial Doom games, or the shareware doom1.wad.
So if you own an original copy of Doom or Doom II or any expansion pack, you're good to go.....if not, use the shareware doom1.wad.
The following is a link to this shareware site so it is legal to d/l and use (being shareware): DOS Games Archive | DOOM
Simply extract the zip to the root of your favourite media device. Start dsdoom.nds in the manner used by your media device (in the case of the R4, by navigating via the first "games" icon and selecting the Doom.nds). Select Standard Game from the initial menu to start a single player game.
Remember:
Quote:
|
IF YOU WISH TO USE THE DOOM2.WAD, YOU NEED TO RENAME IT DOOM.WAD BEFORE TRANSFERRING IT TO THE R4. I.E. BOTH DOOM AND DOOM2 WADS CANNOT EXIST AT THE SAME TIME. In summary, you have to rename your .wad (whatever it is, doom/doom2/tnt/plutonia/doom1 etc etc) to doom.wad before it will load

EDIT: Here's the updated Colours DS site, and here's the latest FrodoDS.

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games etc and Firmware thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
Cheers Gaffer. I still can't get it working though for some reason. As soon as I enter a standard game I get a black screen.
Got doom.nds and that folder you gave me on the root. I've tried it with a number of variations using the folder you gave me in the link, doom.wad and doom.nds. No idea what's going wrong.

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games etc and Firmware thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
Sorry, my mistake , I was reading the general PCDOS readme file.
In the DS version, you also need another file called prboom.wad in the root of your microSD card. prboom.wad contains data files used by DS DOOM to draw non-standard graphics.
More info here: DS Doom | Jefklak’s Codex
Here is a link to all the free doom binaries you need.
In fact, Jefklak's doom page can explain it far better than I ever can .
Summary: - Download the dsdoom_v110_bin.zip binaries from the link above.
- Open it and put dsdoom.nds anywhere you want (mine's in a folder I've called "homebrew")..... but you have to put prboom.wad into the root of the microSD.
- If you have an original copy of doom, goto step 4, if not skip to step 5
- Get your original doom.wad or doom2.wad or tnt.wad or plutonia.wad and rename it doom.wad and place it in the root of your microSD card as well........or......
- If you don't have an original copy, download the shareware doom1.wad either from the link in my previous post or from here (shareware therefore legal to d/l)......as before, rename the shareware doom1.wad to doom.wad and place on the root of the microSD card.
- You should now have dsdoom.nds wherever you choose, and both prboom.wad and doom.wad on the root of your microSD card.
- Once everything's in place, launch the .nds file from wherever it is and that's it......should all work fine.
- After first launch, the game will create a config file "on the fly" and save file, don't worry about these though.
Hopefully that'll work

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games/FW etc thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
Bad news: Apparently CaveStory DS is no longer being developed ..... it's confirmed that it will now be coming to WiiWare , but this means all other dev ports have been suspended . A real shame because it's ideal for handheld use (as evidenced by the brilliant PSP release).

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games/FW etc thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
Not sure if this question should be in here or the flashcart thread (more homebrew I think).
Does anyone know how to put skins on moonshell? I've got some skins and I've tried putting them in the moonshell skins folder but it doesn't work, I'm guessing that's the wrong way but it seemed so obvious

I don't believe that the method would vary depending on which flashcart you're using but a quick google search will come up with a dozen guides so make sure to check those out first.

Nice to see people recommending google rather than helping out.
Trust me google was my first step, I found no tutorials on youtube either. Everything I have read is pretty vague, and actions often speak louder than words hence the reason I turned to youtube.
Take this for example, taken from a link on google:
"skins: As you might have guessed, this folder contains skins for MoonShell. Each folder corresponds to a different skin. Look at the preview.png file (which is in each skin's folder) to see what the skin looks like. Once you chose one, copy everything that's in the folder and paste in the "shell" folder of your CF/SD. If you did things correctly, you should get a message asking you if you want to overwrite some files. Say Yes.
If you downloaded a skin from the Internet, the procedure is the same. Copy all the .bmp and skin.ini to the shell folder."
Isn't this what I described I had done?:
Download and extract your skin to your computer
Put the new skin files in a subfolder of /moonshl/skin
Start Moonshell
In the options turn off the hiding of the moonshl directory
Restart Moonshell (reboot your DS - sigh)
Browse to the new skin folder
'open' skin.ini.
The new skin will then load
Some advice from someone who has already skinned their moonshell would be greatly appreciated

Nevermind I got it
Problem was changing the settings in moonshell to display the moonshl folder, I didn't know where those options were but happened to stumpled upon it today .

Re: Homebrew Apps/Games/FW etc thread (please no discussion of ROMs/Piracy)
I've just discovered this site for homebrew:
Top 30 DS Homebrew Of All Time [As of Jan 2 2008] - GBAtemp.net
Some good stuff on there. The animation thing looks cool, gonna try that out soon.
I'm going to try out that web browser and Bunjallo too, can't get the DSOrganize one to work.
Also the playback feature on Colors is really cool
