Fake DS Lite dilemma

Back in August my DS Lite got stolen in a burglary in Florida (along with all my other gadgets).

I finally decided I wanted another one but I wanted the Cobalt Blue one specifically because it's the best looking imo. I was going to import from VGC when I ventured onto ebay and saw some going for £90 with free delivery and some games thrown in, from Hong Kong.

Why oh why didn't alarm bells ring?

The DS turned up today in a box that felt 'different' to normal DSL boxes. It also said "Color:Polar White" on the side, despite the image being a Cobalt DSL. I unpack and it's clearly fake. The 'cobalt blue' is actually just a flat blue colour (you can see the white edges where it didn't get sprayed properly). The casing screws are regular philips heads, not the usual Nintendo three-way ones.

To top it all off, the touch screen is...bumpy. Running the stylus across it feels awful and rough. Argh!

All that said, it still works and plays games. The touch screen still responds to my input, as do all the buttons.

Now anyway, if you haven't fallen asleep yet, I need help. I'm obviously angered by all this. Paying 90 of my hard-earned for a knock-off. I obviously need to contact the seller/ebay/Paypal but I don't want to pay the £25+ to ship it back to HK, it just doesn't sit right that I should have to fork out to return a mis-advertised (is that a word?) product - for the record the listing made no mention that the DSL wasn't genuine, but then why would it? They're not going to make much money by stating that they're conning people.

Any help greatly appreciated

I can't help other than say if it's too good to be true then it probably is.

Doesn't help does it?

Re: Fake DS Lite dilemma

I would contact the seller and explain the situation and see what response you get, if worst comes to it ebay/paypal do have an option for cover against fake or faulty products so i would definitely look into it.

Was it one of those bundles with something like "100 in 1 DS games" with a few original GBA carts?

Re: Fake DS Lite dilemma

I emailed the seller Yesterday and they're adamant it's not fake when it clearly is (or at least has been modified with a tacky blue cover and printed text on the back made from tipp-ex).

They are at least offering a full refund, postage included (perhaps so I don't involve ebay) which I will probably accept, providing they refund me first as a sign of goodwill. If things don't go to plan, Ebay/Paypal will be contacted.

As for the game bundle, it turned out to be an R4 - probably also a fake - with about 15-20 games on it! They were all crap kiddie games though so I won't miss them.

So anyway - if anyone is looking at buying a DS from ebay - avoid 'Inoblegame168' - or you'll get a dodgy DSL!

Re: Fake DS Lite dilemma

Hi

Can you post a picture of this item ?

This sounds like a refurb that someone has resprayed, there are no DS clones as far as I am aware.

If sending it back is too much of a pain the touch screens can be repalced very cheaply if it is at fault.

That sucks but as long as it's sorted.
Seems expensive for preowned (almost may aswell buy new dsi) but check out game here for some preowned deals.

Re: Fake DS Lite dilemma

I was in the market for one too and missed out, and then missed out on a dsi on the classifieds. This may help :

LittlewoodsDirect DSi 149.99 - £30 (using hotdeals code, try "ZG310" if not others on site (note: only works for 1st time buyers)) = £119.99 delivered

Can also try and get an extra 8% off using quidco.

Looks mighty tempting doesn't it? I went for it

Re: Fake DS Lite dilemma

Hey all,

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I'm in exactly the same boat as the original poster and wondered if someone could help me out.

The seller is refusing to reimburse me until the item arrives back in HK (which I am scared he will deny), and even then is refusing to include the amount I'd have to spend on the postage. Clearly, this is ridiculous given that the item is simply not what was advertised.

I am ready to go to Paypal/eBay, but want to have proof ready to back up my claims. I was wondering if anyone might be able to take some photos for me of their DS Lite (white, if possible...), so I can directly compare what a 'real' one should look like compared to this dodgy knock-off (with a non-functioning shoulder button, no less).

So yeah, if at all possible, could anyone take a picture of...

  • One of the Nintendo tri-wing screws visible on the back of the console (this one just has regular philips screws)
  • The battery (this one has an unofficial battery, of course)
  • The box; in particular, the back of the box where there's a space for the DS' serial number (you can blur it out if you'd like). It's just a big empty space on the box I was sent.
  • And finally, if anyone still has it, the range of documentation that came with the DS. Mine just game with one, brief, pamphlet.
Sorry to be a pain, but I could really do with a hand. Bloody scammers!

Best,
Richard

I'm really sorry about hearing this, what you've received is a newly made DS made from really cheap and flimsy chinese parts. I hope you win your case. I'm sorry but I don't have a white DS lite, I do however have a black one and took these pictures for you, they're in a gallery at imageshack, save them if they're any use to you:

ImageShack© - Gallery

I have also taken a picture of the stylus as yours probably won't have the original nintendo emboss on it. Also, I couldnt get a picture of the screws as my phone camera is poor.

I hope I've been of some help and sorry for the poor quality.

Jit.
