Which DS RPG for a noobster like me

I have just bought a DSI and I have been looking to get stuck into a quality RPG, as the DS seems to be an RPG festival.

I have narrowed my choices down to the following just by looking at scores online, I haven't played any of them before.

I have just bought quite a few games to play on the go but I would like a quality RPG to play at home when I want to sink some more hours in.

  1. Chrono Trigger
  2. Suikoden Tierkreis
  3. Final Fantasy IV
  4. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

If I have missed any them please let me know

Is it just me that forgot you about Zelda: Phantom Hourglass?

Re: Which DS RPG for a noobster like me

I'll give my backing to Zelda. It's more action than true RPG, but it's a must-have either way. Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is also excellent and full of humour, but again, a bit RPG-lite.

I'll also throw Final Fantasy III into the mix, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. Both good games, both completely different. FFIII involves a huge amount of levelling up, RoF less so, but with a few similar elements (weapons and costume choices, etc).

Re: Which DS RPG for a noobster like me

I also recommend Zelda (didn't mention it previously as it isn't a turn-based RPG unlike all the OP's games listed).

As for personal preference I enjoyed Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics A2 the most, but again they not strictly RPG's. As for the rest I either havent played them or finished them but I found a thread where they listed their favourite games and those were mentioned the most times for RPG's.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl & Platinum.

I think the new Final Fantasy: Echoes of Time is out as well.

Re: Which DS RPG for a noobster like me

Thanks for all the replies

At the moment I am playing Chrono Trigger, about 5 hours in I think, just at the part where you are in the futuristic part for anyone else that has played the game.

Also looking to get into a tatics game as they look very interesting.

Currently splitting my time between GTA Chinatown, Puzzle quest original, Chrono Trigger and I'm sorry to say it Elite beat agents, I found it in a bargain bin and I've been playing the hell out of it. However not for extended amounts of time as I would smash the pen through the DSI for sure.

Currently deciding between Final Fantasy A2 and Disgaea DS.

These tactic games tend to remind me of games like X-Com and I was recently looking at the Valkyria Chronicles on PS3

iceyd, noticed you have chipped in with the original comments on Final Fantasy A2 and Disgaea, which one would you recommend most?

Going on holiday shortly and want some games for then, this will be my last one.

If you like the look of the tactical RPGs then you should also consider Fire Emblem .. .. .. ..

What more recommendations, just when I think that I have it sussed

Got to say that I am leaning towards Disgaea DS, seems to just come out on top when put up against Final Fantasy A2, as an added bonus there is a Disgaea game for the PS3 that could be acquired also if I really like to further the experience.

Now I just have to check out Fire Emblem now

Can't believe how much i'm playing the DS, got a PS3 and a 360 sat here and i'm going mental on the DS all the time.

I'd say Disgaea DS is the better game

WOW

Disgaea is totally awesome, i'm proper addicted, so much so that I have just come off of a playsession totalling 5 hours and 47 minutes.

Whoops

Took a little getting used to as I had no clue, still dont know all the ins and outs but I'm really having a blast.

Great game

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (a Square Enix game) is currently eating my life away after completing Chrono Trigger
