Is this true? DSi supports WPA2 but only in new games?

I've read that the DSi supports WPA and WPA2, but nothing was particulary certain due to the fact there never seemed to be solid sources of info about it. This new thing I've just read says that the original DS games had the wireless software actually part of the game, not the DS. Because of this, despite the DSi supporting WPA and WPA2 it only does so in new games that make use of that protocol, old games made for the original DS and DS Lite will still only work with WEP.

Is that really true? Now the DSi is out here in the UK I thought it might be nice to get a definitive answer on it. Thanks.

Yep, spot on.

The DSi does indeed support WPA encryption ... but only for new games specifically coded to use it !
So you still can't play your existing DS games online, if you want to keep your network private.

You couldn't make it up

Well, that pretty much rules out any chance of me getting a DSi!

Seems that you can only use WPA if you want to use most of the interweb features on it.

You can hook up to a WPA2 connection but it will be done via a different section of the DSi set up menu and won't let you have access to most of the gameware uses.

Re: Is this true? DSi supports WPA2 but only in new games?

Just purchased Mario Kart ds today and can confirm that the online won't work and I use WPA. Gives me a message saying won't work with my current security settings.

Only way for me to get it to work is to change to WEP I guess but that's not something I am prepared to do.

Luckily it's the only ds game that I would use online but would have been nice

That doesn't solve the problem regards certain DS games only supporting WEP and not the new WPA security options. You still have to set your DSi to one or the other.

Mine isn't like that ??????????

I have 3 wireless slots (like the DSLite) for internet connection and 3 'advanced settings' slots. I can only add a WPA protected network to the advanced slots but my DSi will detect either my home network (WEP) or my work network (WPA) automatically without me needing to select one or the other. I can't play games online at work but I can use the shop and browser (but, hey, I knew that was the case).

I think the solution for people who want to play DS games online if they are using WPA security on their router is to set up a temporary WEP network using a computer that is wired to their router.

Re: Is this true? DSi supports WPA2 but only in new games?

Very poor effort from Nintendo on this, one of the main "upgrades" with the DSi was the WPA suppport, but they`ve managed to cripple it. Having said that, I can access my router from the built in web browser in the DSi, change to WEP for a quick MarioKart session, then back into the router to change back to proper security, without having to turn on my computer. Of course this leaves my network sl vulnerable, but only for short periods of time.
