Professor Layton & the Curious Village

Hi all,

Just been reading about this game and it seems to get great reviews.

I went online to buy one but am really struggling.

Was it only realeased in the US or something as the PAL UK version seems like gold dust.

There are a few region free ones on ebay, would these be ok for my UK DS lite?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

DS games aren't region coded and will work on any DS from anywhere. I've got an imported DS & games from both US & UK releases, all work absolutely fine.

Moved this to the games section.

It is a great little game, I'd thoroughly recommend it. Very different, quite addictive, and can be played in lots of small chunks of time. My son enjoyed it a lot too, weaned him of Pokemon for a few weeks which is something.

And yes, there's no region coding on DS games.

I pre-ordered this from game on Friday whilst I was picking up Viva Pinata Pocket Paradise.

Think it's scheduled for 14th November release at the moment if anyone's interested.

The latest release schedule that I've seen now says 7th November for a PAL release (so expect it on the 14th as Fifty posted above )

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

I feel like I should apologise for my sins.

I bought this game back in MARCH(!) when I was in the States, had no idea it still wasn't even out here. Anyway it's still sitting in its shrink wrap, completely unplayed.

Does anyone want me to have a go and share my thoughts?

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

I got this on import from movietyme a couple of months ago and I thought it made a great change from the over simple brain training series or endless soduku games. Great variety of puzzles, some are classics you'[ll have seen before , great variation in puzle difficulty and a charming story. Kind of in the tin-tin vein for those that remember him. There are downloadable puzzles to add some longevity once you've completed the story. It isn't essential to complete every puzzle (big plus) so if you get stuck you can usually find another puzzle which will add to your points total and allow you to progress (progression at some stages is by point value and each puzzle scores points according to its' difficulty)

I'd recommend it. If only because I did play all the way through it, tho' ultimately replayability is limited once you know the outcome. Still a from me.

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

Really looking forward to it, had it on pre-order from Game for months now.

Just a shame I have so many new games to try and play (Pro Evo, BioShock and LBP next Wednesday for my PS3) as well as this !!!

I need more time.

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

Theres a sequel been out in japan since early this year called Professor Layton And The Devil's Box I think - no US or UK release date yet which is a shame.

This is quite funny concerning Professor Layton games BUT IT DOES CONTAIN SWEARING SO BE AWARE

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

Can anyone confirm if this is definitely out tomorrow ??

I've pre-ordered from Game, and am ready to pick it up instore, but have noticed that both Play.com and Amazon have gone from having it ready to ship for tomorrow earlier in the week, to a more 'we'll let you know when it's available' approach. And that's despite it getting a bit of TV coverage this week as well.

Neither website now has tomorrow (7th November) listed as the release date.

I ruddy hope it's still out tomorrow, been looking forward to it for ages.

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

Picked this up on Friday and it's fantastic.

The cut scenes are extremely well done, the graphics and animation are perfectly suited to the game, and the puzzles range from easy peasy 2 second jobs to hair tearing, brain busting conundrums.

The story is a bit darker than the general presentation of the game would suggest, I'm only a few chapters in but already there has been a murder and a shady bloke is running around kidnapping folk off the streets, not to mention rumours of a man eating monster!!

It's easy to dismiss this as just a series of logic puzzles, optical illusions and trick questions presented in the style of a treasure hunt/murder mystery but it all hangs together so perfectly that, once you accept the fact that the residents of St Mystere have an illogical obsession with puzzles (something the game itself pokes fun at), you'll be having so much fun you won't care.

Highly recommended, a definite

Is there plenty of stock in the shops? Quite a few of the online retailers (HMV, Amazon etc) seem to have sold out.

None at all it would seem. The distributor only supplied limited stock all of which sold out in the first few days after release and can't supply anymore for a couple of weeks. You would have thought Ninty would check the stock situation before running an ad campaign. Oh, hang on....

To be fair it's not really a mainstream game though is it? Logic puzzles? Not going to appeal to either the 'hardcore' or 'casual' gamer? Is it? Best not make too many and have them sitting around on shelves gathering dust.

*I liked the look of it so much that I imported an American copy, just in case you think that this reply wasn't ironic / sarcastic. oh .. .. .. and it's blummin brilliant!! Can't wait for 2 and 3 to released!!

Quite - particularly given how few units the console itself has sold. And the staff in the shops much prefer answering the same question over and over again rather than actually selling games.

But I'll still forgive them given they make such good games.

Yes it will – there's no region-locking with the DS.

On a different note, anyone else slightly annoyed that just days after Professor Layton and the Curious Village gets its official UK release, Japan gets the third instalment? Forget the Curious Village, the European release schedules/delays are most curious, to say the least.

I believe we're due to catch up over the coming months.

Having hunted high and low for it, I haven't yet had the chance to play the damn thing! Should be a good one for over Christmas.

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

So the most puzzling element of this game thus far is why it's so damn hard to find!

I ordered two copies via Littlewoods Direct only to get a call today saying that they couldn't get it until 9th Jan. So cancelled that.

I'm now tracking via this website...
Professor Layton in stock tracker - Professor Layton and the Curious Village

It's interesting to click on the stock history links on some of the retailers. They stay in stock for literally minutes.

That's what I watched. Both Currys and Dixons came through for me in the end (so at least Christmas is sorted).

Re: Professor Layton & the Curious Village

I've just looked on Movietyme to see how much a US copy would be – £45! I can't believe it. They're going for the same on that well-known online auction site, too.

Having discovered this alarming fact, I trawled through my old receipts. When I ordered my copy, back in February, it was £16. I can't believe that either. I know the exchange rate's not what it was, but a game costing three times as much as it did BEFORE it was even released here, almost a year ago? Astounding. I'd be tempted to sell my copy, if I didn't fear my Professor Layton-addicted girlfriend would break my thumbs if I dared.
