| Re: Need some games advice
I know what you mean about the plethora of Japanese RPG-type games available for the DS, one comes out nearly every week! Apart from PC RPG games (which are completely different, no huge cut-scenes/laborious conversation texts to read through), I'd never played any of the other RPG games, especially anything from the Final Fantasy series as I always thought they looked really complicated and hugely time-consuming. Well I've recently started playing Chrono Trigger and while it can be a little time-consuming it's really not that bad at all. The text pieces you have to read aren't too long and easily skippable with the A button (although lot's of clues are hidden in the text so it's not advisable to skip through them really), there aren't that many cut-scenes really and they are very short and you just focus on wandering round various levels fighting creatues in turn-based battles which means you have more control over using magic and which members of your party do which types of things, rather than just tapping on an enemy and waiting for a couple of minutes while they bash it out. I don't know what any of the Castlevania games are like yet but as I said, I have heard good things about them.
I would say though that there is plenty of variety to be found on the DS if you look, not everything is either a kids game or an RPG (although I can see how you would think that!). There are some good racing games such as GRID and the obvious Mario Kart DS, some excellent rhyhthm-based games like Rhythm Paradise and Guitar Hero and if you're at all interested in making music with your DS then I can't recommend highly enough the Korg DS-10 soft-synth game/cartridge. Even if you have no musical ability whatsoever you can make some excellent electronic music with that cart. There are many others I could mention but it's worth looking into. When I first got my PS3 I was worried because I thought that all the games were just going to be FPS or 3rd-person shooters but like with the DS, once I looked around a bit and read a few games magazines I soon found lots of alternatives.
