DSL not going into standby when closing the lid

My son's DS Lite has just started doing this.

Previously when the console was on, in the middle of a game etc, you could close the clamshell and it would go into standby, effectively pausing the game and would then resume when opened.

This isn't happening now. Instead when you close it, the green power light flashes on & off quite rapidly and you can hear the game freezing on whatever it was last doing - looping over the last fraction of a second of whatever sound was playing as the lid closed.

If you open the lid slightly, you can also see the top screen flashing off & on, from white to black.

The game does resume from where you left it when you open the lid properly.

I realise the answer to the problem is to use the Nintendo service centre and I probably will do this, but I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem, what might be causing it, and whether this is likely to end up as a £30 minor repair or a £60 major repair.

Thanks in advance for your help
